Toughened glass door across Belfast

Frameless doors run with small gaps at the edges and under the door, so they do not seal against sound or draughts the way a framed, gasketed door does. Clear seal strips can reduce the gaps, but where privacy or noise matters, an acoustic framed system may suit better.

Fixed glass screens are held in slim channels or clamps at the floor, walls and ceiling, and the head fixing needs something solid to bite into. Walls and ceilings are rarely perfectly square, so templating records the true shape and the glass is made to follow it, keeping gaps even.

Frameless glass doors are usually made from 10mm or 12mm toughened safety glass, with the thickness chosen to suit the door height and its hardware. With no frame, the glass itself carries the hinges, handles and locks, so every fitting is specified together with the glass.

Toughened glass can very occasionally break on its own because of nickel sulphide inclusions. Heat soak testing to BS EN 14179 reduces that risk by breaking flawed panels in the factory before delivery, though it cannot remove the risk entirely. It is often specified for large doors and screens in busy buildings.

Coast
Belfast is about 1 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. External frameless entrances near the sea face salt spray on patch fittings, pivots and floor spring covers, which can mark or pit finishes over time. Hardware suited to exposed sites, and rinsing fittings during routine cleaning, help them stay smooth and presentable.
Daylight and sun
In Belfast the midwinter sun reaches about 12° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.0 hours of daylight, rising to about 59° and 17.0 hours in midsummer. Clear frameless doors and screens pass daylight deep into hallways and inner rooms. Where a screen faces low winter sun, glare and reflections can be strong, so satin bands or tinted glass can help, while low-iron glass keeps pale colours true.
Access and setting
Large glass panels for city shops, offices and flats can need a planned delivery, a team to carry them, and sometimes a lift or crane booking. Access through communal areas, loading limits and permitted working hours all affect the fitting day.

Specification choices

Pivot door with patches

Corner patch fittings with a floor spring or pivot, the usual choice for shop and office entrances and wide internal doors that need controlled closing.

Satin or patterned glass

Acid-etched, sandblasted-effect or patterned glass that gives privacy while still passing light, available as full panels or as bands.

Frameless sliding door

A glass panel running on top-hung sliding gear across the opening, saving floor space where a swinging door would get in the way.

Frameless Glass in Belfast: questions

What happens if a frameless glass door breaks?

Toughened glass breaks into small, blunt pieces rather than large shards, so the door will need to be fully replaced rather than repaired. We can make the opening safe and secure in the meantime, then remake the panel from the original measurements or a fresh template, with holes and cut-outs formed before toughening.

What thickness of glass is used for frameless glass doors?

Frameless doors usually use 10mm or 12mm toughened safety glass. The thicker glass is generally used for taller or wider doors and for busy commercial entrances, while 10mm often suits internal doors in homes. The hardware maker's limits for panel weight and size also guide the choice, and we confirm the thickness in your written quote.

Can a frameless glass door be locked?

Yes. A patch lock at the bottom of the door shoots a bolt into a keep in the floor, and a centre lock can join a pair of doors. A glass door does not offer the same resistance as a solid door, so for external entrances you may also want shutters, an alarm or laminated security glass in adjoining screens.

Will a frameless glass door block noise and draughts?

Only partly. Frameless doors run with small gaps at the sides and bottom so the glass can swing freely, which lets some sound and air through. Clear seal strips can narrow the gaps. If you need a quiet meeting room or a draught-free external entrance, a framed or acoustic glazed system will perform better, and we can quote for both.
