Glass stair balustrade in Middlesbrough

Glass guarding must resist the horizontal loads set for how the space is used, and those loads rise from a private home to offices, shops and busy public areas. Glass thickness, fixing system and anchors are matched to that load, so a system suited to a house stair may not suit a bar terrace.

The interlayer inside laminated glass decides how a broken panel behaves. Standard PVB holds the fragments together but can let a fully broken panel sag, while stiffer structural interlayers help it stay upright. The right choice depends on whether a handrail is fitted and how exposed the balustrade is.

A frameless channel only performs as well as the structure it is bolted into. Channels need a solid base such as concrete or steel, and timber decks or floor joists often need extra steelwork or blocking. Checking the substrate at survey stage avoids panels that flex or loosen under load.

Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or shaped once it has been toughened, so every hole, notch and corner is made before processing. That is why we template on site and order each panel to exact sizes. A panel made to the wrong measurement has to be remade, not trimmed.

Coast
Middlesbrough sits roughly 6 km from the nearest coastline, close enough that exposure on open or high ground is worth considering. Salt air attacks lower-grade metal fittings and leaves deposits on glass, so balustrades near the coast need hardware and finishes suited to marine exposure, well-drained channels and regular rinsing. Strong onshore wind on exposed balconies also affects the glass and fixing specification.
Daylight and sun
In Middlesbrough the midwinter sun reaches about 12° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.0 hours of daylight, rising to about 59° and 17.0 hours in midsummer. Glass guarding on a sunny balcony brings in heat and glare as well as the view. Tinted or satin glass can soften low winter sun on a terrace, while low-iron glass keeps colours true on north-facing spaces where every bit of daylight counts.
Access and setting
Flats and town houses often mean carrying long panels through stairwells or lifting them by hand to upper balconies, so panels may need splitting. Parking and loading limits, building management rules and leaseholder consents can all affect when we fit.
Rules in England
Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations in England: glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door, up to 1500 mm above floor level, and any glazing in walls or partitions up to 800 mm above floor level.

Approved Document K sets minimum guarding heights in England, typically 900 mm for internal stairs and landings and 1100 mm for balconies and external edges of homes. Glass guarding must be designed to resist the loads set out in BS 6180 and the loading standards it refers to.

Options to choose between

Top handrail

A capping rail along the top edge in stainless steel, aluminium or timber, which ties panels together and gives a firm hand hold.

Low-iron glass

Glass with less iron, which removes the green tint seen on the edges of standard glass, most noticeable in thick laminated panels.

Frameless channel system

Laminated toughened glass held in a continuous floor channel, giving a clean edge with no posts. Suits balconies, terraces, decks and modern stairs.

Glass Balustrades in Middlesbrough: questions

What happens if a balustrade panel breaks?

With laminated glass, the broken panel is held together by its interlayer and should stay in place until it is replaced. With toughened-only glass, the panel breaks into small pieces and the handrail becomes the barrier. Either way, keep people away from the edge and contact us so we can make the area safe and remake the panel to size.

Do glass balustrades need a handrail?

Not always. Under BS 6180, a handrail should be used where the glass guards a drop of more than 600mm, unless laminated toughened glass is used that would stay in place if a panel broke. Frameless systems without a top rail therefore use laminated glass, while toughened-only glass needs a handrail tied across the panels. We confirm which applies to your job at survey.

Can a glass balustrade be fitted to timber decking?

Yes, but the deck frame usually needs strengthening first. Glass guarding puts significant load into its fixings, and ordinary deck joists are not designed to take it. We check the frame at survey and may recommend steel brackets, extra blocking, or a post or spigot system instead of a long continuous channel.

How high does a glass balustrade have to be?

In England, the minimum height in a single-family home is 900mm for stairs, landings and internal floor edges, and 1100mm for external balconies, Juliet balconies and roof edges. Other building types have their own heights in the same guidance. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland publish separate guidance, so we confirm the figure that applies to your property.
