Glass balcony balustrade in Swansea
BS 6180, the code of practice for barriers, says a handrail should be used where glass guards a drop of more than 600mm, unless the glass is laminated toughened glass that would stay in place if a panel failed. That is why frameless balustrades without a top rail use laminated glass.
Glass balustrades need little upkeep beyond cleaning with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive glass cleaner. Outdoors, rinse grit and salt from fittings, keep drainage slots in channels clear, and check clamps, spigots and handrail joints once a year for any loosening or movement.
Toughened glass can occasionally break without impact because of tiny nickel sulphide inclusions. Heat soak testing to BS EN 14179 reduces that risk by breaking flawed panels in the factory, but it does not remove it entirely, which is one more reason laminated glass is used in guarding.
Glass guarding must resist the horizontal loads set for how the space is used, and those loads rise from a private home to offices, shops and busy public areas. Glass thickness, fixing system and anchors are matched to that load, so a system suited to a house stair may not suit a bar terrace.

About Swansea for this job
- Postcodes covered
- SA1, SA2, SA5 and the surrounding area, including Clydach, Briton Ferry and Gorseinon
- Coast
- Swansea is about 1 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Salt air attacks lower-grade metal fittings and leaves deposits on glass, so balustrades near the coast need hardware and finishes suited to marine exposure, well-drained channels and regular rinsing. Strong onshore wind on exposed balconies also affects the glass and fixing specification.
- Daylight and sun
- In Swansea the midwinter sun reaches about 15° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.6 hours of daylight, rising to about 62° and 16.4 hours in midsummer. Glass guarding on a sunny balcony brings in heat and glare as well as the view. Tinted or satin glass can soften low winter sun on a terrace, while low-iron glass keeps colours true on north-facing spaces where every bit of daylight counts.
- Access and setting
- Flats and town houses often mean carrying long panels through stairwells or lifting them by hand to upper balconies, so panels may need splitting. Parking and loading limits, building management rules and leaseholder consents can all affect when we fit.
- Rules in Wales
- In Wales, Approved Document N covers safety glazing: safety glass is needed in and around doors and in low-level glazing where people could walk into it.

Welsh building regulations set minimum guarding heights for stairs, landings and balconies, and glass guarding must be designed to resist the required loads.
What you can choose
Side-fixed standoffs
Glass fixed to the face of a slab, stair stringer or balcony edge with round standoffs through drilled holes, keeping the walking surface completely clear.
Spigot fixed
Individual spigots hold each panel at its base instead of a continuous channel. Common on decking, around pools and in gardens.
Tinted or satin glass
Grey, bronze or satin-etched glass that adds privacy or cuts glare on balconies and terraces overlooked by neighbours or streets.
Glass Balustrades in Swansea: questions
Do glass balustrades need a handrail?
Not always. Under BS 6180, a handrail should be used where the glass guards a drop of more than 600mm, unless laminated toughened glass is used that would stay in place if a panel broke. Frameless systems without a top rail therefore use laminated glass, while toughened-only glass needs a handrail tied across the panels. We confirm which applies to your job at survey.
What happens if a balustrade panel breaks?
With laminated glass, the broken panel is held together by its interlayer and should stay in place until it is replaced. With toughened-only glass, the panel breaks into small pieces and the handrail becomes the barrier. Either way, keep people away from the edge and contact us so we can make the area safe and remake the panel to size.
Can a glass balustrade be fitted to timber decking?
Yes, but the deck frame usually needs strengthening first. Glass guarding puts significant load into its fixings, and ordinary deck joists are not designed to take it. We check the frame at survey and may recommend steel brackets, extra blocking, or a post or spigot system instead of a long continuous channel.
How thick does the glass in a balustrade need to be?
Glass thickness depends on the fixing system, the panel height and the load the barrier must resist, so there is no single answer. Frameless channel systems commonly use thick laminated toughened glass, such as 21.5mm, while post and clamp systems often use thinner glass. The system maker's tested data sets the minimum, and we specify from that.
