Dorset: toughened glass splashback

Glass splashbacks have no grout lines to stain, so cleaning is simply a soft cloth with warm soapy water or a non-abrasive glass cleaner. Avoid scourers, abrasive creams and sharp scrapers, which can scratch the glass surface and dull the finish over time.

The price depends on the total glass area, the number of panels and joints, the number of cut-outs, the colour and glass type, and access to the wall. Low-iron glass, metallic or printed finishes and complex shapes add cost. See the guide prices for typical ranges.

Standard glass has a green tint that shows through back-painted colours, especially whites, creams and pale greys. Low-iron glass contains less iron, removes most of that tint and keeps the painted colour close to the sample, so it is the usual choice for light colours.

Hob makers set minimum clearances between the hob and nearby wall surfaces, and gas hobs in particular can have specific requirements. We check your hob's installation instructions before ordering so the glass, its cut-outs and any joints sit where the manufacturer allows.

What applies in Dorset

Building regulations do not usually apply to this type of work, but we confirm anything that does in writing with your quote.

Dorset has its own coastline, so for homes and businesses near the sea, salt air and wind-driven rain are part of the brief. Splashbacks sit indoors, so the coast affects them little, but kitchens in damp coastal homes can see condensation on cold external walls. The wall needs to be dry and sound before bonding, and good extraction helps keep edges and silicone clean.

Kitchens in flats and terraces often have narrow access and tight stairs, so long splashbacks may be split into shorter panels with planned joints. Parking for the fitting team and building rules on working hours can also affect scheduling.

Choosing your glass splashbacks

Satin finish

Acid-etched glass with a soft, low-sheen face that reduces reflections and glare, useful opposite windows or bright lighting.

Metallic or sparkle finish

Back-painted glass with metallic or fine sparkle effects, adding depth and reflection without the upkeep of polished metal.

Printed design

A digitally printed image or pattern on the back of the glass, sealed behind it so the front stays smooth and wipeable.

Low-iron glass

Glass with less iron, removing the green tint of standard glass so whites, creams and pale colours look true to the sample.

Glass Splashbacks in Dorset: questions

Can a glass splashback go behind a hob?

Yes, provided it is toughened glass and the hob maker's clearances are followed. Toughened glass copes with the heat from a hob far better than ordinary glass, and it is what we fit behind cookers. Some gas hobs need a minimum gap to the wall, so we check your hob's instructions before the glass is ordered.

Can I fit a glass splashback myself?

It is possible, but the risks are mostly in measuring and handling. A small error in templating or a socket position means the toughened panel has to be remade, because it cannot be trimmed. Large panels are heavy and awkward to place without damaging worktops, and the adhesive must suit the painted back. We measure, make and fit as one job.

When should my glass splashback be measured?

Your splashback should be templated after the worktops, units and hob are installed and any electrical work is finished. The glass is made to the exact finished dimensions, including socket positions, so measuring from plans or before worktops go in often leads to panels that do not fit and have to be remade.

Why does my white glass splashback look slightly green?

Standard glass contains iron, which gives it a green tint that shows through pale back-painted colours, particularly white and cream. Low-iron glass has much less iron, so the colour behind looks close to the painted sample. If you are choosing a light colour, it is worth specifying low-iron glass from the start.
