Toughened glass splashback for homes and businesses in Dumbarton
Hob makers set minimum clearances between the hob and nearby wall surfaces, and gas hobs in particular can have specific requirements. We check your hob's installation instructions before ordering so the glass, its cut-outs and any joints sit where the manufacturer allows.
Splashbacks are made from toughened glass because it copes with heat from a hob and with the stress around socket cut-outs far better than ordinary glass. Untoughened coloured glass is more prone to cracking behind a hob or across a cut-out, so we only fit toughened panels.
Our glaziers remove and refit socket and switch faceplates so the glass can sit behind them, with the power isolated first. Moving or adding sockets, or any other electrical alteration, needs a qualified electrician, ideally before the splashback is templated.
Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening, so every socket, switch, extractor and window-reveal cut-out is made beforehand. Sockets cannot be moved after the glass is ordered without remaking the panel, so electrical positions need to be final at templating.
What you get
- Removal and refitting of socket and switch faceplates
- Silicone-finished edges, final clean and care advice
- Survey and templating after worktops and hob are fitted
- Back-painting to your chosen colour or finish

Working in Dumbarton
- Postcodes covered
- G82 and the surrounding area, including Vale of Leven, Port Glasgow and Erskine
- Coast
- Dumbarton is about 1 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Splashbacks sit indoors, so the coast affects them little, but kitchens in damp coastal homes can see condensation on cold external walls. The wall needs to be dry and sound before bonding, and good extraction helps keep edges and silicone clean.
- Daylight and sun
- In Dumbarton the midwinter sun reaches about 11° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 6.7 hours of daylight, rising to about 58° and 17.3 hours in midsummer. Glossy glass reflects light from windows and under-cabinet lighting, brightening a dark kitchen. Low winter sun hitting a glass wall can cause glare, so a satin finish may suit a splashback that faces a south-facing window.
- Access and setting
- Older rural homes often have uneven solid walls with lime plaster or stone, so the wall may need making flat before glass can be bonded. Where a range cooker is fitted, its heat and clearance needs are checked before ordering.
- Rules in Scotland
- Building regulations do not usually apply to this type of work, but we confirm anything that does in writing with your quote.

Back-painted glass with metallic or fine sparkle effects, adding depth and reflection without the upkeep of polished metal.
Glass Splashbacks in Dumbarton: questions
Can I fit a glass splashback myself?
It is possible, but the risks are mostly in measuring and handling. A small error in templating or a socket position means the toughened panel has to be remade, because it cannot be trimmed. Large panels are heavy and awkward to place without damaging worktops, and the adhesive must suit the painted back. We measure, make and fit as one job.
How do I clean a glass splashback?
Wipe it with a soft cloth and warm soapy water, or a non-abrasive glass cleaner, then buff dry for a streak-free finish. Grease behind the hob comes off easily because there are no grout lines. Avoid scourers, abrasive creams and blades, which can scratch the glass, and do not use cleaners that could seep behind the edges.
Why does my white glass splashback look slightly green?
Standard glass contains iron, which gives it a green tint that shows through pale back-painted colours, particularly white and cream. Low-iron glass has much less iron, so the colour behind looks close to the painted sample. If you are choosing a light colour, it is worth specifying low-iron glass from the start.
Can you cut holes in a glass splashback for sockets?
Yes. Socket, switch and extractor cut-outs are made at the factory before the glass is toughened, because toughened glass cannot be cut afterwards. That means socket positions must be final when we template. If sockets need moving or adding, a qualified electrician should do that first, and we template around the new positions.
