Glass splashback behind hob for homes and businesses in Gloucester
Standard glass has a green tint that shows through back-painted colours, especially whites, creams and pale greys. Low-iron glass contains less iron, removes most of that tint and keeps the painted colour close to the sample, so it is the usual choice for light colours.
Our glaziers remove and refit socket and switch faceplates so the glass can sit behind them, with the power isolated first. Moving or adding sockets, or any other electrical alteration, needs a qualified electrician, ideally before the splashback is templated.
Colours look different on screens, in daylight and under kitchen lighting, so choose from a physical glass sample rather than a website or paint chart. We can match many paint and RAL colours, and a sample panel viewed in your own kitchen avoids surprises.
Long runs and tall walls are usually made from more than one panel, because large sheets are heavy and hard to carry through houses. Joints are planned at corners, behind the hob centre line or at natural breaks, and are finished with a thin, neat silicone line.

Gloucester at a glance
- Postcodes covered
- GL1, GL2, GL4 and the surrounding area, including Cheltenham, Stroud and Tewkesbury
- Coast
- Gloucester sits roughly 14 km from the nearest coastline, close enough that exposure on open or high ground is worth considering. Splashbacks sit indoors, so the coast affects them little, but kitchens in damp coastal homes can see condensation on cold external walls. The wall needs to be dry and sound before bonding, and good extraction helps keep edges and silicone clean.
- Daylight and sun
- In Gloucester the midwinter sun reaches about 15° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.5 hours of daylight, rising to about 62° and 16.5 hours in midsummer. Glossy glass reflects light from windows and under-cabinet lighting, brightening a dark kitchen. Low winter sun hitting a glass wall can cause glare, so a satin finish may suit a splashback that faces a south-facing window.
- Access and setting
- Kitchens in flats and terraces often have narrow access and tight stairs, so long splashbacks may be split into shorter panels with planned joints. Parking for the fitting team and building rules on working hours can also affect scheduling.
- Rules in England
- Building regulations do not usually apply to this type of work, but we confirm anything that does in writing with your quote.

Glass Splashbacks in Gloucester: questions
Can you cut holes in a glass splashback for sockets?
Yes. Socket, switch and extractor cut-outs are made at the factory before the glass is toughened, because toughened glass cannot be cut afterwards. That means socket positions must be final when we template. If sockets need moving or adding, a qualified electrician should do that first, and we template around the new positions.
Can a glass splashback go behind a hob?
Yes, provided it is toughened glass and the hob maker's clearances are followed. Toughened glass copes with the heat from a hob far better than ordinary glass, and it is what we fit behind cookers. Some gas hobs need a minimum gap to the wall, so we check your hob's instructions before the glass is ordered.
Can a glass splashback be fitted over existing tiles?
It is usually better to remove the tiles and make the wall good first. Glass needs a flat, sound surface for the adhesive to bond evenly, and grout lines, uneven tiles or loose tiles can show through or create stress points. Removing tiles also stops the glass standing too far forward of the worktop and sockets.
How long does it take to get a glass splashback fitted?
After templating, made-to-measure splashbacks are usually ready within a few weeks, depending on the colour and finish. Fitting a typical kitchen takes part of a day, and you can normally use the kitchen again once we have finished. The silicone needs time to cure fully, and we tell you how long on the day.
