Frameless shower screens in Bo'ness

Shower screen glass is toughened safety glass made to BS EN 12150. It is heated and then quickly cooled during manufacture, which makes it much stronger than ordinary glass and means that if it does break, it breaks into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards.

Glass thickness is usually 8mm or 10mm for frameless work. 8mm suits most doors and enclosures, while 10mm is commonly used for walk-in and wet room panels that stand with little support and need to stay rigid when knocked or leaned on.

The glass screen stops spray, but it is not the waterproofing. The tanking behind the tiles, the tray or floor fall and the drain do that job. Clear silicone along the glass edges then seals the joints, and it needs time to cure before the shower is used.

An easy-clean coating is a water-repellent layer bonded to the glass that helps water run off and reduces limescale and soap marks. It does not stop cleaning altogether, and how long it lasts depends on following the care instructions and avoiding abrasive products.

Coast
Bo'ness is about 1 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Shower glass sits indoors, so salt air has little effect on it, but coastal homes can have damp, humid air that slows drying. Good bathroom ventilation and a quick squeegee after use help prevent mould on the silicone and marks on the hardware.
Daylight and sun
In Bo'ness the midwinter sun reaches about 10° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 6.7 hours of daylight, rising to about 57° and 17.3 hours in midsummer. Bathrooms with small or north-facing windows benefit from clear or low-iron glass that does not block the daylight available. Where a window looks onto the shower, a satin band or obscure glass gives privacy without making the room feel darker.
Access and setting
Older rural homes often have uneven walls, sloping ceilings and timber floors that flex, all of which shape the screen design. Hard water is common in some areas, so an easy-clean coating and regular squeegeeing help keep the glass clear.
Rules in Scotland
Section 4 (Safety) of the Scottish Technical Handbooks covers glazing that people could collide with, such as glass in and beside doors and low-level glazing, where safety glass is needed.

Choosing your shower screens

Low-iron glass

Glass with less iron, which removes the green edge tint of standard glass and keeps tiles and stone looking their true colour.

Walk-in wet room panel

A single fixed glass panel with a bracing bar or floor channel, leaving an open entry and no door to clean or adjust.

Over-bath screen

A fixed or hinged toughened glass panel on the bath edge, made to measure for baths that sit against sloping ceilings or uneven walls.

Shower Screens in Bo'ness: questions

How do I stop limescale building up on shower glass?

The simplest habit is to squeegee the glass after every shower so water does not dry on it. Clean weekly with a mild, non-abrasive bathroom cleaner and a soft cloth, and rinse well. Avoid scouring pads, powders and strong descalers, which can scratch coatings, dull hinge finishes and break down silicone seals.

How long does it take to fit a shower screen?

Most shower screens are fitted in a single visit once the glass has been made, which usually takes a couple of weeks after measuring. The silicone then needs time to cure, so you should wait before using the shower, and we tell you how long on the day. Your quote confirms the expected timescale.

Is an easy-clean coating on shower glass worth having?

An easy-clean coating makes water bead and run off, so limescale and soap marks build up more slowly and wiping takes less effort. It is most useful in hard-water areas. It does not replace cleaning, and its life depends on using non-abrasive products, so we give you the care instructions with the screen.

Can a shower screen be fitted to a stud or plasterboard wall?

Yes, provided the hinges and brackets fix into solid backing. On stud or plasterboard walls that usually means timber noggins behind the fixing points, or suitable heavy-duty fixings where noggins were not fitted. A heavy glass door on weak fixings can drop or pull away, so we check the wall during the survey.
