About wet room glass panel in Bath

The glass screen stops spray, but it is not the waterproofing. The tanking behind the tiles, the tray or floor fall and the drain do that job. Clear silicone along the glass edges then seals the joints, and it needs time to cure before the shower is used.

Shower screen glass is toughened safety glass made to BS EN 12150. It is heated and then quickly cooled during manufacture, which makes it much stronger than ordinary glass and means that if it does break, it breaks into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards.

The price depends mainly on panel sizes, the number of panels, glass thickness, the hinge and bracing hardware, and any cut-outs for sloping ceilings, trays or skirting. Low-iron or satin glass, an easy-clean coating and special finishes add cost. See the guide prices for typical ranges.

A walk-in panel fixed only at the wall and floor needs a bracing bar running to the wall or ceiling to stop it flexing. The bar's position is planned around tiles, windows and shower valves, and a floor channel can reduce or remove the need for a brace.

Working in Bath

Postcodes covered
BA1, BA2 and the surrounding area, including Keynsham, Trowbridge and Kingswood
Coast
Bath is well inland, around 29 km from the nearest coast, so salt exposure is not usually a factor.
Daylight and sun
In Bath the midwinter sun reaches about 15° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.6 hours of daylight, rising to about 62° and 16.4 hours in midsummer. Bathrooms with small or north-facing windows benefit from clear or low-iron glass that does not block the daylight available. Where a window looks onto the shower, a satin band or obscure glass gives privacy without making the room feel darker.
Access and setting
Flats often mean carrying large panels up stairs or in small lifts, so panel sizes may need splitting. Building rules on working hours and noise, and bathrooms above other homes, make careful sealing and protection of finishes especially important.
Rules in England
Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations in England: glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door, up to 1500 mm above floor level, and any glazing in walls or partitions up to 800 mm above floor level.

Specification choices

Easy-clean coating

A water-repellent coating bonded to the glass that helps water bead and run off, reducing limescale and the time spent cleaning.

Pivot door

A door that swings on pivots set in from its edge, useful where the swing space in front of the shower is limited.

Low-iron glass

Glass with less iron, which removes the green edge tint of standard glass and keeps tiles and stone looking their true colour.

Shower Screens in Bath: questions

Can a shower screen be fitted to a stud or plasterboard wall?

Yes, provided the hinges and brackets fix into solid backing. On stud or plasterboard walls that usually means timber noggins behind the fixing points, or suitable heavy-duty fixings where noggins were not fitted. A heavy glass door on weak fixings can drop or pull away, so we check the wall during the survey.

How do I stop limescale building up on shower glass?

The simplest habit is to squeegee the glass after every shower so water does not dry on it. Clean weekly with a mild, non-abrasive bathroom cleaner and a soft cloth, and rinse well. Avoid scouring pads, powders and strong descalers, which can scratch coatings, dull hinge finishes and break down silicone seals.

Why have a shower screen made to measure instead of buying one?

A made-to-measure screen fits the space exactly, which matters where walls are out of plumb, ceilings slope, trays are non-standard or the opening is an unusual width. Off-the-shelf enclosures rely on adjustment profiles that can leave wide gaps or visible frames. Bespoke glass follows the real shape of the room and keeps sealant lines neat.

What thickness of glass should a shower screen be?

For frameless screens, 8mm toughened glass suits most doors and enclosures, and 10mm is commonly used for walk-in and wet room panels that stand with little support. Thinner glass is used in framed enclosures where the frame does some of the work. We recommend a thickness at survey based on the panel size and how it is fixed.
