West Sussex: walk in shower screen

Toughened glass can very occasionally break on its own because of nickel sulphide inclusions. Heat soak testing to BS EN 14179 reduces that risk by breaking flawed panels in the factory, though it cannot remove it completely, and it can be specified for any screen.

Hinges carry the full weight of a glass door, so they must fix into solid backing. Tiled plasterboard or stud walls usually need timber noggins or suitable heavy-duty fixings behind the hinge positions, which is easier to arrange before tiling than afterwards.

Because toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening, hinge holes, clamp positions and notches around trays or skirting are formed before the glass goes into the furnace. A panel that does not fit has to be remade, so accurate templating matters.

Glass-to-wall and glass-to-glass hinges suit most doors, and pivot hinges let a door swing from a point set in from the edge. Doors normally open outwards, so check the swing clears the toilet, basin and bathroom door before choosing a layout.

What applies in West Sussex

Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations in England: glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door, up to 1500 mm above floor level, and any glazing in walls or partitions up to 800 mm above floor level.

West Sussex has its own coastline, so for homes and businesses near the sea, salt air and wind-driven rain are part of the brief. Shower glass sits indoors, so salt air has little effect on it, but coastal homes can have damp, humid air that slows drying. Good bathroom ventilation and a quick squeegee after use help prevent mould on the silicone and marks on the hardware.

Older rural homes often have uneven walls, sloping ceilings and timber floors that flex, all of which shape the screen design. Hard water is common in some areas, so an easy-clean coating and regular squeegeeing help keep the glass clear.

A fixed or hinged toughened glass panel on the bath edge, made to measure for baths that sit against sloping ceilings or uneven walls.

Hinged door enclosure

A glass door on wall or glass hinges with fixed side panels, suiting alcoves, corners and trays where a fully enclosed shower is wanted.

Shower Screens in West Sussex: questions

Will a frameless shower screen leak?

A well-designed frameless screen contains spray effectively, but it is not completely watertight like a sealed enclosure. Leaks are prevented by the right panel length, a properly falling floor or level tray, drip and sweep seals on doors, and neat silicone on fixed edges. Shower head position matters too, so we look at it during the survey.

What thickness of glass should a shower screen be?

For frameless screens, 8mm toughened glass suits most doors and enclosures, and 10mm is commonly used for walk-in and wet room panels that stand with little support. Thinner glass is used in framed enclosures where the frame does some of the work. We recommend a thickness at survey based on the panel size and how it is fixed.

When should my shower screen be measured?

Your screen should be measured once the walls are tiled and the tray or wet room floor is finished. The glass is made to follow the exact angles of the finished surfaces, and tiles, adhesive and trims all change the dimensions. If you are mid-renovation, we can advise on fixing positions and backing before tiling starts.

How long does it take to fit a shower screen?

Most shower screens are fitted in a single visit once the glass has been made, which usually takes a couple of weeks after measuring. The silicone then needs time to cure, so you should wait before using the shower, and we tell you how long on the day. Your quote confirms the expected timescale.
