Toughened glass panels in Derry~Londonderry: what to know
Glass tabletops and shelves need the right thickness for the span and load. Thicker glass deflects less, so a long shelf or a large table needs a heavier panel than a small side table. The supplier confirms a suitable thickness for the use, not just the size.
Laminated glass is two or more sheets bonded with a plastic interlayer, often PVB. If it breaks, the pieces stick to the interlayer and the pane stays in place. That makes it useful for overhead glass, ground-floor security and openings where an empty hole would be a risk.
Once glass has been toughened, it cannot be cut, drilled, notched or edge-worked. All shaping, holes for handles or hinges, and cut-outs for sockets must be finished on the float glass first. This is why accurate measuring and templates matter before any order is placed.
The price of safety glass depends on its size, thickness, whether it is toughened or laminated, the edge finish, the number of holes and cut-outs, any shapes or curves, and whether it is supplied only or fitted. Low-iron or tinted glass costs more than clear float.

Derry~Londonderry at a glance
- Postcodes covered
- BT48 and the surrounding area, including Strabane, Limavady and Portstewart
- Coast
- Derry~Londonderry sits roughly 6 km from the nearest coastline, close enough that exposure on open or high ground is worth considering. Near the coast, salt spray can mark exposed glass edges and corrode metal fixings. Polished edges and sealed laminated edges cope better outdoors, and stainless steel clamps and hinges are worth specifying for external safety glass panels and screens.
- Daylight and sun
- In Derry~Londonderry the midwinter sun reaches about 12° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 6.9 hours of daylight, rising to about 58° and 17.1 hours in midsummer. Strong sun on large glass panels can cause glare and fade furniture behind them. Tinted, solar control or low-iron toughened glass each change how much light, heat and colour come through, so orientation is worth considering when choosing.
- Access and setting
- In flats and city buildings, large panels of safety glass may need to fit through narrow stairs, lifts and doorways. Measuring access routes at the survey avoids problems, and laminated glass suits ground-floor doors and screens facing the street.

- Technical Booklet V covers safety glazing in Northern Ireland, including glass in and around doors and low-level glazing where people could walk into it.

Safety Glass in Derry~Londonderry: questions
Should I choose a polished or arrised edge?
Choose polished edges where the edge will be seen or touched, such as tabletops, shelves and frameless panels, because they are smooth and look neat. Arrised edges are lightly sanded to remove sharpness and are fine where the edge sits hidden in a frame. Bevelled edges are decorative and suit mirrors and some tabletops.
Can toughened glass break on its own?
Rarely, yes. Tiny nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass can expand over time and cause a toughened pane to break without an obvious impact. Edge damage during fitting can also cause later failure. Heat soak testing reduces the risk of inclusion-related breakage, and careful handling and correct fitting protect the edges.
Can toughened glass be cut or drilled after it is made?
No. Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or edge-worked once it has been toughened, because any damage to the surface releases the internal stress and the whole pane shatters. All sizes, holes and cut-outs must be finalised before toughening. That is why accurate measurements or a template are needed before the order is placed.
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heat treated so it is stronger and, if broken, crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces, leaving the opening empty. Laminated glass is sheets bonded to an interlayer, so when it breaks the pieces stay stuck in place. Both can be safety glass. Laminated is preferred where falling glass or an open hole would be a hazard.
