About toughened glass table top in Carlisle
Once glass has been toughened, it cannot be cut, drilled, notched or edge-worked. All shaping, holes for handles or hinges, and cut-outs for sockets must be finished on the float glass first. This is why accurate measuring and templates matter before any order is placed.
When measuring for a replacement panel, measure the opening or old glass in at least two places for width and height, and note the thickness. For anything with holes, curves or angled corners, a hardboard or card template gives the most reliable result.
Safety glass in a building should carry a permanent mark, usually in a corner, that stays visible after fitting. It names the maker or supplier and the standard, such as BS EN 12150 for toughened glass. The mark is how a buyer or inspector can confirm what was fitted.
In England, Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations: glass in a door or within 300mm of a door edge, up to 1500mm above the floor, and other glass within 800mm of the floor. The rules are similar elsewhere in the UK, but the detail differs.

Carlisle at a glance
- Postcodes covered
- CA1, CA2, CA3 and the surrounding area, including Annan, Penrith and Lockerbie
- Coast
- Carlisle sits roughly 11 km from the nearest coastline, close enough that exposure on open or high ground is worth considering. Near the coast, salt spray can mark exposed glass edges and corrode metal fixings. Polished edges and sealed laminated edges cope better outdoors, and stainless steel clamps and hinges are worth specifying for external safety glass panels and screens.
- Daylight and sun
- In Carlisle the midwinter sun reaches about 12° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 6.9 hours of daylight, rising to about 58° and 17.1 hours in midsummer. Strong sun on large glass panels can cause glare and fade furniture behind them. Tinted, solar control or low-iron toughened glass each change how much light, heat and colour come through, so orientation is worth considering when choosing.
- Access and setting
- In flats and city buildings, large panels of safety glass may need to fit through narrow stairs, lifts and doorways. Measuring access routes at the survey avoids problems, and laminated glass suits ground-floor doors and screens facing the street.
- Rules in England
- Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations in England: glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door, up to 1500 mm above floor level, and any glazing in walls or partitions up to 800 mm above floor level.

Approved Document Q applies to new homes in England, where doors and windows are expected to meet PAS 24 or an equivalent standard. It does not apply to replacements in existing homes, but PAS 24 products are still a sensible choice.
What you can choose
Low-iron glass
Extra-clear glass with much less green tint, chosen for tabletops, shelving and panels where colour and edge clarity matter.
Holes and cut-outs
Drilled holes for handles, hinges and fixings, and cut-outs for sockets, all made before the glass is toughened.
Clear toughened glass
Heat-treated float glass that breaks into small, blunt pieces, for doors, screens, tabletops and shelves in a range of thicknesses.
Safety Glass in Carlisle: questions
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heat treated so it is stronger and, if broken, crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces, leaving the opening empty. Laminated glass is sheets bonded to an interlayer, so when it breaks the pieces stay stuck in place. Both can be safety glass. Laminated is preferred where falling glass or an open hole would be a hazard.
Can toughened glass be cut or drilled after it is made?
No. Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or edge-worked once it has been toughened, because any damage to the surface releases the internal stress and the whole pane shatters. All sizes, holes and cut-outs must be finalised before toughening. That is why accurate measurements or a template are needed before the order is placed.
Is laminated glass better for security?
Laminated glass usually gives better security than toughened glass of similar thickness, because the interlayer holds the glass together after it cracks, so making a hole takes more effort. Thicker interlayers and multi-layer laminates give more resistance. For ground-floor windows, shopfronts and doors, laminated glass is often chosen for this reason.
Can toughened glass break on its own?
Rarely, yes. Tiny nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass can expand over time and cause a toughened pane to break without an obvious impact. Edge damage during fitting can also cause later failure. Heat soak testing reduces the risk of inclusion-related breakage, and careful handling and correct fitting protect the edges.
