Toughened glass cut to size in Hailsham
Toughened glass can, in rare cases, break without any obvious impact because of tiny nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass. Heat soak testing exposes the toughened glass to heat for a set period to break susceptible panes before supply, which reduces the risk without removing it completely.
Edge finish affects both look and safety. Arrised edges are lightly sanded to take off sharpness and suit glass held in frames. Polished edges are smooth and clear for exposed edges on tables, shelves and frameless panels. Bevelled edges add a decorative angled border.
Once glass has been toughened, it cannot be cut, drilled, notched or edge-worked. All shaping, holes for handles or hinges, and cut-outs for sockets must be finished on the float glass first. This is why accurate measuring and templates matter before any order is placed.
Low-iron glass removes most of the slight green tint that ordinary clear glass shows at its edge and through thick panels. It suits tabletops, display shelves and splashback-style panels where true colours and a clearer edge matter.

Working in Hailsham
- Postcodes covered
- BN27 and the surrounding area, including Eastbourne, Seaford and Bexhill-on-Sea
- Coast
- Hailsham sits roughly 8 km from the nearest coastline, close enough that exposure on open or high ground is worth considering. Near the coast, salt spray can mark exposed glass edges and corrode metal fixings. Polished edges and sealed laminated edges cope better outdoors, and stainless steel clamps and hinges are worth specifying for external safety glass panels and screens.
- Daylight and sun
- In Hailsham the midwinter sun reaches about 16° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.7 hours of daylight, rising to about 63° and 16.3 hours in midsummer. Strong sun on large glass panels can cause glare and fade furniture behind them. Tinted, solar control or low-iron toughened glass each change how much light, heat and colour come through, so orientation is worth considering when choosing.
- Access and setting
- Older rural homes often have internal doors and screens with old, unmarked glass. Upgrading them to toughened or laminated safety glass is common, and timber door frames may need careful beading when the new glass is fitted.
- Rules in England
- Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations in England: glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door, up to 1500 mm above floor level, and any glazing in walls or partitions up to 800 mm above floor level.

Approved Document Q applies to new homes in England, where doors and windows are expected to meet PAS 24 or an equivalent standard. It does not apply to replacements in existing homes, but PAS 24 products are still a sensible choice.
Choosing your safety glass
Laminated safety glass
Two or more sheets bonded with an interlayer that holds broken glass in place, for overhead, security and fall-risk locations.
Satin or obscure finish
Acid-etched or patterned glass for privacy in doors and screens, toughened or laminated to meet safety requirements.
Low-iron glass
Extra-clear glass with much less green tint, chosen for tabletops, shelving and panels where colour and edge clarity matter.
Safety Glass in Hailsham: questions
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heat treated so it is stronger and, if broken, crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces, leaving the opening empty. Laminated glass is sheets bonded to an interlayer, so when it breaks the pieces stay stuck in place. Both can be safety glass. Laminated is preferred where falling glass or an open hole would be a hazard.
How do I know if my glass is safety glass?
Look for a permanent mark etched or printed in a corner of the pane. It should name the maker or supplier and the standard, such as BS EN 12150 for toughened glass, or show a BS EN 12600 class. Older glass may have no mark. If you are unsure, a glazier can check and advise.
Can toughened glass break on its own?
Rarely, yes. Tiny nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass can expand over time and cause a toughened pane to break without an obvious impact. Edge damage during fitting can also cause later failure. Heat soak testing reduces the risk of inclusion-related breakage, and careful handling and correct fitting protect the edges.
What thickness of toughened glass do I need for a table or shelf?
It depends on the size, how the glass is supported and the load it will carry. Small side tables can use thinner glass, while large dining tables and long shelves need thicker panels to limit bending. Tell us the dimensions, support method and what it will hold, and we will confirm a suitable thickness in the quote.
