About toughened glass cut to size in Rayleigh
BS EN 12600 classifies safety glass by a pendulum impact test, with class 1 the highest and class 3 the lowest. In England, critical locations generally need at least class 3, and door or side panels wider than 900mm need class 2 or better.
Glass tabletops and shelves need the right thickness for the span and load. Thicker glass deflects less, so a long shelf or a large table needs a heavier panel than a small side table. The supplier confirms a suitable thickness for the use, not just the size.
Toughened glass is ordinary float glass that has been cut to size, heated and then cooled quickly with jets of air. This leaves the surfaces in compression, making it several times stronger than untreated glass of the same thickness. When it does break, it crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces.
Laminated glass is two or more sheets bonded with a plastic interlayer, often PVB. If it breaks, the pieces stick to the interlayer and the pane stays in place. That makes it useful for overhead glass, ground-floor security and openings where an empty hole would be a risk.

Local details for Rayleigh
- Postcodes covered
- SS6 and the surrounding area, including South Benfleet, Wickford and Pitsea
- Coast
- Rayleigh is about 5 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Near the coast, salt spray can mark exposed glass edges and corrode metal fixings. Polished edges and sealed laminated edges cope better outdoors, and stainless steel clamps and hinges are worth specifying for external safety glass panels and screens.
- Daylight and sun
- In Rayleigh the midwinter sun reaches about 15° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.6 hours of daylight, rising to about 62° and 16.4 hours in midsummer. Strong sun on large glass panels can cause glare and fade furniture behind them. Tinted, solar control or low-iron toughened glass each change how much light, heat and colour come through, so orientation is worth considering when choosing.
- Access and setting
- Older rural homes often have internal doors and screens with old, unmarked glass. Upgrading them to toughened or laminated safety glass is common, and timber door frames may need careful beading when the new glass is fitted.
- Rules in England
- Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations in England: glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door, up to 1500 mm above floor level, and any glazing in walls or partitions up to 800 mm above floor level.

Approved Document Q applies to new homes in England, where doors and windows are expected to meet PAS 24 or an equivalent standard. It does not apply to replacements in existing homes, but PAS 24 products are still a sensible choice.
Choosing your safety glass
Satin or obscure finish
Acid-etched or patterned glass for privacy in doors and screens, toughened or laminated to meet safety requirements.
Laminated safety glass
Two or more sheets bonded with an interlayer that holds broken glass in place, for overhead, security and fall-risk locations.
Low-iron glass
Extra-clear glass with much less green tint, chosen for tabletops, shelving and panels where colour and edge clarity matter.
Safety Glass in Rayleigh: questions
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heat treated so it is stronger and, if broken, crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces, leaving the opening empty. Laminated glass is sheets bonded to an interlayer, so when it breaks the pieces stay stuck in place. Both can be safety glass. Laminated is preferred where falling glass or an open hole would be a hazard.
Should I choose a polished or arrised edge?
Choose polished edges where the edge will be seen or touched, such as tabletops, shelves and frameless panels, because they are smooth and look neat. Arrised edges are lightly sanded to remove sharpness and are fine where the edge sits hidden in a frame. Bevelled edges are decorative and suit mirrors and some tabletops.
How do I know if my glass is safety glass?
Look for a permanent mark etched or printed in a corner of the pane. It should name the maker or supplier and the standard, such as BS EN 12150 for toughened glass, or show a BS EN 12600 class. Older glass may have no mark. If you are unsure, a glazier can check and advise.
Can toughened glass be cut or drilled after it is made?
No. Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or edge-worked once it has been toughened, because any damage to the surface releases the internal stress and the whole pane shatters. All sizes, holes and cut-outs must be finalised before toughening. That is why accurate measurements or a template are needed before the order is placed.
