Caernarfon: toughened glass panels
Once glass has been toughened, it cannot be cut, drilled, notched or edge-worked. All shaping, holes for handles or hinges, and cut-outs for sockets must be finished on the float glass first. This is why accurate measuring and templates matter before any order is placed.
Low-iron glass removes most of the slight green tint that ordinary clear glass shows at its edge and through thick panels. It suits tabletops, display shelves and splashback-style panels where true colours and a clearer edge matter.
The price of safety glass depends on its size, thickness, whether it is toughened or laminated, the edge finish, the number of holes and cut-outs, any shapes or curves, and whether it is supplied only or fitted. Low-iron or tinted glass costs more than clear float.
Laminated glass is two or more sheets bonded with a plastic interlayer, often PVB. If it breaks, the pieces stick to the interlayer and the pane stays in place. That makes it useful for overhead glass, ground-floor security and openings where an empty hole would be a risk.

About Caernarfon for this job
- Postcodes covered
- LL55 and the surrounding area, including Bangor (Gwynedd), Pwllheli and Holyhead
- Coast
- Caernarfon is about 2 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Near the coast, salt spray can mark exposed glass edges and corrode metal fixings. Polished edges and sealed laminated edges cope better outdoors, and stainless steel clamps and hinges are worth specifying for external safety glass panels and screens.
- Daylight and sun
- In Caernarfon the midwinter sun reaches about 13° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.3 hours of daylight, rising to about 60° and 16.7 hours in midsummer. Strong sun on large glass panels can cause glare and fade furniture behind them. Tinted, solar control or low-iron toughened glass each change how much light, heat and colour come through, so orientation is worth considering when choosing.
- Access and setting
- Older rural homes often have internal doors and screens with old, unmarked glass. Upgrading them to toughened or laminated safety glass is common, and timber door frames may need careful beading when the new glass is fitted.
- Rules in Wales
- In Wales, Approved Document N covers safety glazing: safety glass is needed in and around doors and in low-level glazing where people could walk into it.

Security rules for doors and windows differ between the UK nations. For replacement doors and windows in Wales, products tested to PAS 24 are a sensible benchmark.
Specification choices
Laminated safety glass
Two or more sheets bonded with an interlayer that holds broken glass in place, for overhead, security and fall-risk locations.
Heat soak testing
An extra heat test after toughening that reduces the risk of spontaneous breakage from nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass.
Polished edges
Smooth, clear edges for exposed glass on tables, shelves and frameless panels, safer to handle and neater to look at.
Safety Glass in Caernarfon: questions
Is laminated glass better for security?
Laminated glass usually gives better security than toughened glass of similar thickness, because the interlayer holds the glass together after it cracks, so making a hole takes more effort. Thicker interlayers and multi-layer laminates give more resistance. For ground-floor windows, shopfronts and doors, laminated glass is often chosen for this reason.
Should I choose a polished or arrised edge?
Choose polished edges where the edge will be seen or touched, such as tabletops, shelves and frameless panels, because they are smooth and look neat. Arrised edges are lightly sanded to remove sharpness and are fine where the edge sits hidden in a frame. Bevelled edges are decorative and suit mirrors and some tabletops.
How do I know if my glass is safety glass?
Look for a permanent mark etched or printed in a corner of the pane. It should name the maker or supplier and the standard, such as BS EN 12150 for toughened glass, or show a BS EN 12600 class. Older glass may have no mark. If you are unsure, a glazier can check and advise.
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heat treated so it is stronger and, if broken, crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces, leaving the opening empty. Laminated glass is sheets bonded to an interlayer, so when it breaks the pieces stay stuck in place. Both can be safety glass. Laminated is preferred where falling glass or an open hole would be a hazard.
