Litherland: toughened glass table top
Safety glass in a building should carry a permanent mark, usually in a corner, that stays visible after fitting. It names the maker or supplier and the standard, such as BS EN 12150 for toughened glass. The mark is how a buyer or inspector can confirm what was fitted.
BS EN 12600 classifies safety glass by a pendulum impact test, with class 1 the highest and class 3 the lowest. In England, critical locations generally need at least class 3, and door or side panels wider than 900mm need class 2 or better.
The price of safety glass depends on its size, thickness, whether it is toughened or laminated, the edge finish, the number of holes and cut-outs, any shapes or curves, and whether it is supplied only or fitted. Low-iron or tinted glass costs more than clear float.
In England, Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations: glass in a door or within 300mm of a door edge, up to 1500mm above the floor, and other glass within 800mm of the floor. The rules are similar elsewhere in the UK, but the detail differs.

Litherland at a glance
- Postcodes covered
- L21, L22, L20 and the surrounding area, including Bootle, Norris Green and Maghull
- Coast
- Litherland is about 3 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Near the coast, salt spray can mark exposed glass edges and corrode metal fixings. Polished edges and sealed laminated edges cope better outdoors, and stainless steel clamps and hinges are worth specifying for external safety glass panels and screens.
- Daylight and sun
- In Litherland the midwinter sun reaches about 13° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.2 hours of daylight, rising to about 60° and 16.8 hours in midsummer. Strong sun on large glass panels can cause glare and fade furniture behind them. Tinted, solar control or low-iron toughened glass each change how much light, heat and colour come through, so orientation is worth considering when choosing.
- Access and setting
- Older rural homes often have internal doors and screens with old, unmarked glass. Upgrading them to toughened or laminated safety glass is common, and timber door frames may need careful beading when the new glass is fitted.
- Rules in England
- Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations in England: glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door, up to 1500 mm above floor level, and any glazing in walls or partitions up to 800 mm above floor level.

Approved Document Q applies to new homes in England, where doors and windows are expected to meet PAS 24 or an equivalent standard. It does not apply to replacements in existing homes, but PAS 24 products are still a sensible choice.
What you can choose
Low-iron glass
Extra-clear glass with much less green tint, chosen for tabletops, shelving and panels where colour and edge clarity matter.
Satin or obscure finish
Acid-etched or patterned glass for privacy in doors and screens, toughened or laminated to meet safety requirements.
Clear toughened glass
Heat-treated float glass that breaks into small, blunt pieces, for doors, screens, tabletops and shelves in a range of thicknesses.
Safety Glass in Litherland: questions
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heat treated so it is stronger and, if broken, crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces, leaving the opening empty. Laminated glass is sheets bonded to an interlayer, so when it breaks the pieces stay stuck in place. Both can be safety glass. Laminated is preferred where falling glass or an open hole would be a hazard.
Can toughened glass break on its own?
Rarely, yes. Tiny nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass can expand over time and cause a toughened pane to break without an obvious impact. Edge damage during fitting can also cause later failure. Heat soak testing reduces the risk of inclusion-related breakage, and careful handling and correct fitting protect the edges.
Where is safety glass required in a house?
In England, safety glass is needed in critical locations: glass in doors and within 300mm of a door edge, up to 1500mm above floor level, and other glass within 800mm of the floor. Small panes and leaded lights have specific exceptions. The rules elsewhere in the UK are similar, but the detail differs between nations.
Should I choose a polished or arrised edge?
Choose polished edges where the edge will be seen or touched, such as tabletops, shelves and frameless panels, because they are smooth and look neat. Arrised edges are lightly sanded to remove sharpness and are fine where the edge sits hidden in a frame. Bevelled edges are decorative and suit mirrors and some tabletops.
