Redcar: safety glass for doors
Toughened glass can, in rare cases, break without any obvious impact because of tiny nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass. Heat soak testing exposes the toughened glass to heat for a set period to break susceptible panes before supply, which reduces the risk without removing it completely.
BS EN 12600 classifies safety glass by a pendulum impact test, with class 1 the highest and class 3 the lowest. In England, critical locations generally need at least class 3, and door or side panels wider than 900mm need class 2 or better.
Edge finish affects both look and safety. Arrised edges are lightly sanded to take off sharpness and suit glass held in frames. Polished edges are smooth and clear for exposed edges on tables, shelves and frameless panels. Bevelled edges add a decorative angled border.
Glass tabletops and shelves need the right thickness for the span and load. Thicker glass deflects less, so a long shelf or a large table needs a heavier panel than a small side table. The supplier confirms a suitable thickness for the use, not just the size.

Local details for Redcar
- Postcodes covered
- TS6, TS10 and the surrounding area, including Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Billingham
- Coast
- Redcar is about 1 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Near the coast, salt spray can mark exposed glass edges and corrode metal fixings. Polished edges and sealed laminated edges cope better outdoors, and stainless steel clamps and hinges are worth specifying for external safety glass panels and screens.
- Daylight and sun
- In Redcar the midwinter sun reaches about 12° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.0 hours of daylight, rising to about 59° and 17.0 hours in midsummer. Strong sun on large glass panels can cause glare and fade furniture behind them. Tinted, solar control or low-iron toughened glass each change how much light, heat and colour come through, so orientation is worth considering when choosing.
- Access and setting
- Older rural homes often have internal doors and screens with old, unmarked glass. Upgrading them to toughened or laminated safety glass is common, and timber door frames may need careful beading when the new glass is fitted.
- Rules in England
- Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations in England: glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door, up to 1500 mm above floor level, and any glazing in walls or partitions up to 800 mm above floor level.

Approved Document Q applies to new homes in England, where doors and windows are expected to meet PAS 24 or an equivalent standard. It does not apply to replacements in existing homes, but PAS 24 products are still a sensible choice.
Choosing your safety glass
Clear toughened glass
Heat-treated float glass that breaks into small, blunt pieces, for doors, screens, tabletops and shelves in a range of thicknesses.
Satin or obscure finish
Acid-etched or patterned glass for privacy in doors and screens, toughened or laminated to meet safety requirements.
Toughened laminated glass
Toughened sheets laminated together, combining strength with post-breakage retention, often used for frameless panels and higher-load applications.
Safety Glass in Redcar: questions
Where is safety glass required in a house?
In England, safety glass is needed in critical locations: glass in doors and within 300mm of a door edge, up to 1500mm above floor level, and other glass within 800mm of the floor. Small panes and leaded lights have specific exceptions. The rules elsewhere in the UK are similar, but the detail differs between nations.
What thickness of toughened glass do I need for a table or shelf?
It depends on the size, how the glass is supported and the load it will carry. Small side tables can use thinner glass, while large dining tables and long shelves need thicker panels to limit bending. Tell us the dimensions, support method and what it will hold, and we will confirm a suitable thickness in the quote.
Why do I need to wait for toughened glass?
Toughened glass is made to order. Each panel is cut, edge-worked and drilled from float glass, then heated and cooled in a toughening furnace. It cannot be cut from stock once toughened. Your written quote shows the expected timescale, and the glazier will confirm fitting arrangements once the glass is ready.
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heat treated so it is stronger and, if broken, crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces, leaving the opening empty. Laminated glass is sheets bonded to an interlayer, so when it breaks the pieces stay stuck in place. Both can be safety glass. Laminated is preferred where falling glass or an open hole would be a hazard.
