Toughened glass table top across Scarborough

BS EN 12600 classifies safety glass by a pendulum impact test, with class 1 the highest and class 3 the lowest. In England, critical locations generally need at least class 3, and door or side panels wider than 900mm need class 2 or better.

Low-iron glass removes most of the slight green tint that ordinary clear glass shows at its edge and through thick panels. It suits tabletops, display shelves and splashback-style panels where true colours and a clearer edge matter.

Once glass has been toughened, it cannot be cut, drilled, notched or edge-worked. All shaping, holes for handles or hinges, and cut-outs for sockets must be finished on the float glass first. This is why accurate measuring and templates matter before any order is placed.

The price of safety glass depends on its size, thickness, whether it is toughened or laminated, the edge finish, the number of holes and cut-outs, any shapes or curves, and whether it is supplied only or fitted. Low-iron or tinted glass costs more than clear float.

About Scarborough for this job

Postcodes covered
YO11, YO12 and the surrounding area, including Bridlington, Whitby and Driffield
Coast
Scarborough is about 1 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Near the coast, salt spray can mark exposed glass edges and corrode metal fixings. Polished edges and sealed laminated edges cope better outdoors, and stainless steel clamps and hinges are worth specifying for external safety glass panels and screens.
Daylight and sun
In Scarborough the midwinter sun reaches about 12° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.1 hours of daylight, rising to about 59° and 16.9 hours in midsummer. Strong sun on large glass panels can cause glare and fade furniture behind them. Tinted, solar control or low-iron toughened glass each change how much light, heat and colour come through, so orientation is worth considering when choosing.
Access and setting
In flats and city buildings, large panels of safety glass may need to fit through narrow stairs, lifts and doorways. Measuring access routes at the survey avoids problems, and laminated glass suits ground-floor doors and screens facing the street.
Rules in England
Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations in England: glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door, up to 1500 mm above floor level, and any glazing in walls or partitions up to 800 mm above floor level.

Approved Document Q applies to new homes in England, where doors and windows are expected to meet PAS 24 or an equivalent standard. It does not apply to replacements in existing homes, but PAS 24 products are still a sensible choice.

Options to choose between

Clear toughened glass

Heat-treated float glass that breaks into small, blunt pieces, for doors, screens, tabletops and shelves in a range of thicknesses.

Holes and cut-outs

Drilled holes for handles, hinges and fixings, and cut-outs for sockets, all made before the glass is toughened.

Polished edges

Smooth, clear edges for exposed glass on tables, shelves and frameless panels, safer to handle and neater to look at.

Safety Glass in Scarborough: questions

Can toughened glass be cut or drilled after it is made?

No. Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or edge-worked once it has been toughened, because any damage to the surface releases the internal stress and the whole pane shatters. All sizes, holes and cut-outs must be finalised before toughening. That is why accurate measurements or a template are needed before the order is placed.

Can toughened glass break on its own?

Rarely, yes. Tiny nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass can expand over time and cause a toughened pane to break without an obvious impact. Edge damage during fitting can also cause later failure. Heat soak testing reduces the risk of inclusion-related breakage, and careful handling and correct fitting protect the edges.

How do I know if my glass is safety glass?

Look for a permanent mark etched or printed in a corner of the pane. It should name the maker or supplier and the standard, such as BS EN 12150 for toughened glass, or show a BS EN 12600 class. Older glass may have no mark. If you are unsure, a glazier can check and advise.

How much does toughened glass cut to size cost?

The price depends on the dimensions, thickness, glass type, edge finish, number of holes and cut-outs, any shapes, and whether you want supply only or fitting. Laminated, low-iron and obscure glass cost more than clear toughened. See the guide prices for typical panels, then get a written quote for your exact specification.
