About laminated safety glass in Erskine
When measuring for a replacement panel, measure the opening or old glass in at least two places for width and height, and note the thickness. For anything with holes, curves or angled corners, a hardboard or card template gives the most reliable result.
Low-iron glass removes most of the slight green tint that ordinary clear glass shows at its edge and through thick panels. It suits tabletops, display shelves and splashback-style panels where true colours and a clearer edge matter.
Toughened glass is ordinary float glass that has been cut to size, heated and then cooled quickly with jets of air. This leaves the surfaces in compression, making it several times stronger than untreated glass of the same thickness. When it does break, it crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces.
The price of safety glass depends on its size, thickness, whether it is toughened or laminated, the edge finish, the number of holes and cut-outs, any shapes or curves, and whether it is supplied only or fitted. Low-iron or tinted glass costs more than clear float.

About Erskine for this job
- Postcodes covered
- PA8, G60, G81 and the surrounding area, including Clydebank, Renfrew and Bearsden
- Coast
- Erskine is about 6 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Near the coast, salt spray can mark exposed glass edges and corrode metal fixings. Polished edges and sealed laminated edges cope better outdoors, and stainless steel clamps and hinges are worth specifying for external safety glass panels and screens.
- Daylight and sun
- In Erskine the midwinter sun reaches about 11° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 6.7 hours of daylight, rising to about 58° and 17.3 hours in midsummer. Strong sun on large glass panels can cause glare and fade furniture behind them. Tinted, solar control or low-iron toughened glass each change how much light, heat and colour come through, so orientation is worth considering when choosing.
- Access and setting
- Older rural homes often have internal doors and screens with old, unmarked glass. Upgrading them to toughened or laminated safety glass is common, and timber door frames may need careful beading when the new glass is fitted.
- Rules in Scotland
- Section 4 (Safety) of the Scottish Technical Handbooks covers glazing that people could collide with, such as glass in and beside doors and low-level glazing, where safety glass is needed.

Security standards for doors and windows apply to new homes in Scotland; for replacements, PAS 24 products are a sensible choice.
Options to choose between
Holes and cut-outs
Drilled holes for handles, hinges and fixings, and cut-outs for sockets, all made before the glass is toughened.
Clear toughened glass
Heat-treated float glass that breaks into small, blunt pieces, for doors, screens, tabletops and shelves in a range of thicknesses.
Toughened laminated glass
Toughened sheets laminated together, combining strength with post-breakage retention, often used for frameless panels and higher-load applications.
Safety Glass in Erskine: questions
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heat treated so it is stronger and, if broken, crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces, leaving the opening empty. Laminated glass is sheets bonded to an interlayer, so when it breaks the pieces stay stuck in place. Both can be safety glass. Laminated is preferred where falling glass or an open hole would be a hazard.
Why do I need to wait for toughened glass?
Toughened glass is made to order. Each panel is cut, edge-worked and drilled from float glass, then heated and cooled in a toughening furnace. It cannot be cut from stock once toughened. Your written quote shows the expected timescale, and the glazier will confirm fitting arrangements once the glass is ready.
Can toughened glass break on its own?
Rarely, yes. Tiny nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass can expand over time and cause a toughened pane to break without an obvious impact. Edge damage during fitting can also cause later failure. Heat soak testing reduces the risk of inclusion-related breakage, and careful handling and correct fitting protect the edges.
How do I know if my glass is safety glass?
Look for a permanent mark etched or printed in a corner of the pane. It should name the maker or supplier and the standard, such as BS EN 12150 for toughened glass, or show a BS EN 12600 class. Older glass may have no mark. If you are unsure, a glazier can check and advise.
