One way mirror window film across Bridgend
Not every glass suits every film. Dark or reflective films absorb more heat, which can cause thermal stress cracks in some glass, especially large annealed panes or tinted glass. A film-to-glass compatibility check before ordering looks at glass type, size, thickness and whether it is double glazed.
The cost of window film depends on the total area, the type of film, the number and size of panes, whether the film is applied inside or outside, any edge anchoring, cut designs or lettering, and access. Large single panes cost less per area than many small panes.
Window film is usually a polyester film with a pressure-sensitive adhesive on one side and a scratch-resistant coat on the other. BS EN 15752-1 sets out definitions and performance requirements for adhesive-backed polymeric film used on glass in buildings.
Workplace regulations require windows, glazed doors and transparent partitions to be of safety material or protected against breakage where needed for health or safety. On existing glass in a workplace, a suitable tested safety film is one way of protecting it without replacing the pane.

About Bridgend for this job

- Coast
- Bridgend sits roughly 7 km from the nearest coastline, close enough that exposure on open or high ground is worth considering. On the coast, bright sea light and reflection can make glare a bigger problem, so glare-reduction films are worth considering. External films face salt spray and weather, so internal application is usually preferred where the glass and film allow it.
- Daylight and sun
- In Bridgend the midwinter sun reaches about 15° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.6 hours of daylight, rising to about 62° and 16.4 hours in midsummer. Low winter sun and strong afternoon sun on south and west elevations cause the most glare and heat. Solar films reduce this but also cut some daylight, so north-facing rooms usually suit lighter films that keep as much light as possible.
- Access and setting
- Rural homes with conservatories, garden rooms or large glazed doors often face full sun and glare. Solar control and UV films help, but older glass and leaded lights need careful compatibility checks before film is applied.
- Rules in Wales
- In Wales, Approved Document N covers safety glazing: safety glass is needed in and around doors and in low-level glazing where people could walk into it.

Listed buildings in Wales need listed building consent for most changes to historic windows; Cadw publishes guidance on looking after traditional windows.
Choosing your window film
Frosted privacy film
An etched-look finish that lets light in and obscures the view, for bathrooms, side panels and ground-floor windows.
One-way mirror film
Reflective film that gives daytime privacy from outside, while still allowing a view out from the brighter-lit room.
Security film with anchoring
Thicker film with the edge fixed to the frame, designed to delay entry through ground-floor windows and shopfronts.
Window Film in Bridgend: questions
Why are there bubbles or haze after the film is fitted?
Film is applied with a slip solution, and a small amount of water remains under it at first. This can show as haze or small pockets that clear as the film cures. Curing takes longer in cold or damp weather. Do not press or clean the film until it has cured. Air bubbles that remain after curing should be reported.
Do I need permission to fit window film?
Usually not for ordinary homes, but check first if the building is listed or in a conservation area. Reflective or coloured films change how windows look from outside, and alterations to a listed building's character can need listed building consent. Leaseholders should also check their lease and any rules from the freeholder or managing agent.
Does one-way mirror film work at night?
No. One-way mirror film only gives privacy when it is brighter outside than inside. In the evening, with lights on in the room, people outside can see in, and you see your own reflection instead. For privacy at night, combine it with blinds or curtains, or choose a frosted film that obscures the view in both directions.
Does solar film make a room darker?
It depends on the film. Light-coloured and spectrally selective films reduce heat with only a small drop in daylight, while darker and more reflective films cut more heat and glare but also more light. The fitter can show samples on your glass so you can judge the effect before choosing.
