Mirror cut to size in County Londonderry: what to know

In bathrooms, good ventilation does more to protect a mirror than anything else, because steam and condensation reach the edges and backing. A heated demister pad behind the mirror keeps it clear after showers, but it needs wiring by a qualified electrician.

A safety-backed mirror has a film bonded across its back that holds the pieces together if the glass breaks, so fragments stay on the backing instead of falling or scattering. Some backing films are classified for impact under BS EN 12600, and the film is applied before fitting.

The price depends on mirror size and thickness, the number of panels, the edge finish, tint or low-iron glass, safety backing, cut-outs and the fixing method. Gym walls, very large single sheets and difficult access also affect cost. See the guide prices for typical ranges.

To protect the edges, spray glass cleaner onto a soft cloth rather than directly onto the mirror, so liquid does not run down and soak into the bottom edge. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners, and dry the edges after cleaning in bathrooms.

What applies in County Londonderry

Technical Booklet V covers safety glazing in Northern Ireland, including glass in and around doors and low-level glazing where people could walk into it.

County Londonderry has its own coastline, so for homes and businesses near the sea, salt air and wind-driven rain are part of the brief. Mirrors are fitted indoors, but salty, humid coastal air can still reach the silver backing through exposed edges, particularly in bathrooms and near entrances. Protected edges, a compatible adhesive and good ventilation all help prevent black edge corrosion.

Older rural homes often have uneven walls of stone or lime plaster, which can distort a bonded mirror unless the wall is levelled or a backing board is used. Damp solid walls also need checking before a mirror is fixed to them.

Bespoke Mirrors in County Londonderry: questions

What is a safety-backed mirror and do I need one?

A safety-backed mirror has a film bonded across its back that holds the pieces together if the glass breaks. You should consider one wherever someone could knock or fall against the mirror, such as wardrobe doors, full-height mirrors, gyms, dance studios and children's rooms. We recommend it at survey when the position or use of the room calls for it.

Can I have a bespoke mirror in a bathroom?

Yes, provided the room is well ventilated and the mirror is protected from standing water. We use mirror that meets the relevant standard for internal use, bond it with a compatible adhesive and keep edges away from splashes where possible. A heated demister pad can keep part of the mirror clear, wired in by a qualified electrician.

What affects the cost of a bespoke mirror?

The main cost drivers are the size and thickness of the mirror, the number of panels, the edge finish, any tint or low-iron glass, safety backing, cut-outs and the fixing method. Very large single sheets, access through narrow stairs and full mirror walls also affect the price. See the guide prices for typical ranges.

Can a large mirror be fixed to plasterboard?

Often, yes, but it depends on the board, its fixings and the surface finish. Adhesive grips the paint or plaster layer, so flaky paint or weak skim can let go under the weight. We check the wall at survey and may add a base channel, mechanical fixings into studs, or a backing board to spread the load.
