County Londonderry: replacement bifold doors

Bifold doors run on rollers along a track, either top-hung with the weight carried by the head or bottom-rolling with the weight on the threshold. Top-hung systems depend on a strong, stiff lintel or steel above, so the glazier checks support before ordering, because sagging heads cause doors to bind.

Security on bifold doors comes from multi-point locks on the traffic door, shoot bolts top and bottom on the folding panels, internally glazed beads, anti-lift track design and hinges that cannot be removed from outside. Ask whether the system has been tested to PAS 24 and fit an anti-snap cylinder.

Bifold doors take longer to manufacture than standard doors because each set is made to the opening and coated to order. Fitting a typical set usually takes one to two days, depending on width, removal of old doors and any making good to plaster, flooring and the patio outside.

Bifold door panels have wider frames where they meet than a sliding door, because each panel needs its own frame and hinges. A five-panel set shows four vertical sightlines when closed. If the view matters more than a fully open wall, a sliding door may suit better, so compare both.

What applies in County Londonderry

Technical Booklet V covers safety glazing in Northern Ireland, including glass in and around doors and low-level glazing where people could walk into it.

Replacement windows on houses in Northern Ireland are often permitted development, but conservation areas and listed buildings can need consent. Check with the council's planning office.

County Londonderry has its own coastline, so for homes and businesses near the sea, salt air and wind-driven rain are part of the brief. Salt deposits gather in bifold tracks and on rollers, so coastal sets need more frequent cleaning, stainless or protected running gear, and a coating suited to marine exposure. Wind-driven rain makes a raised threshold or good drainage especially important on exposed elevations.

Rural gardens often slope or sit lower than the floor, so threshold height and drainage need careful planning. Exposed open sites benefit from stiffer aluminium systems, raised thresholds and outward-opening doors that seal against the wind.

Choosing your bifold doors

Timber bifolds

Engineered hardwood or softwood panels for a natural finish, factory coated and needing periodic re-coating over their life.

uPVC bifolds

A lower-cost option with bulkier frames, suited to smaller openings with fewer panels, available in white, grey and woodgrain foils.

Integrated blinds

Blinds sealed between the panes of each unit, controlled by a magnetic slider, so they never need dusting or catch on folding.

Aluminium bifolds

Slim, stiff thermally broken panels that carry large glass units, powder coated in a wide range of colours and finishes.

Bifold Doors in County Londonderry: questions

How much do bifold doors cost?

The cost of bifold doors depends on the opening width and height, number of panels, material, colour, glass, threshold type and the condition of the opening. Aluminium usually costs more than uPVC, and wider sets, triple glazing and special finishes add more. See the guide prices for typical ranges; the written quote fixes the price for your specification.

Do bifold doors leak or let in draughts?

Well-made bifold doors fitted level and square should keep out wind and rain, but they rely on accurate installation, a sound lintel and working drainage. Leaks usually come from blocked track drainage, a flush threshold on an exposed elevation or panels that have dropped out of adjustment. Keeping the tracks clean prevents most problems.

Are bifold doors secure?

Good bifold doors are secure when the traffic door has a multi-point lock and anti-snap cylinder, the other panels have shoot bolts top and bottom, the glass is internally beaded and the hinges and track resist lifting. Ask whether the system has been tested to PAS 24, and consider laminated glass for ground-floor doors.

Bifold or sliding doors: which should I choose?

Bifold doors suit you if you want almost the whole opening clear in summer, because the panels fold and stack to the side. Sliding doors suit you if you want the fewest frames and the widest view when closed, because large panels glide past each other. Many people decide by how often they will fully open the doors.
