Made to measure mirrors across Cumbria
To protect the edges, spray glass cleaner onto a soft cloth rather than directly onto the mirror, so liquid does not run down and soak into the bottom edge. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners, and dry the edges after cleaning in bathrooms.
A safety-backed mirror has a film bonded across its back that holds the pieces together if the glass breaks, so fragments stay on the backing instead of falling or scattering. Some backing films are classified for impact under BS EN 12600, and the film is applied before fitting.
Most mirrors for internal use are made from silver-coated float glass covered by BS EN 1036-1, which sets definitions, quality requirements and test methods, including resistance to damp and corrosion. Mirror for bathrooms or other humid areas should come from a supplier whose product meets that standard.
Safety backing is a sensible choice wherever someone could fall or knock against a mirror, such as sliding wardrobe doors, full-height mirrors, children's rooms, gyms and dance studios. We recommend it at survey wherever the position or use of the room suggests it.

What applies in Cumbria
Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations in England: glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door, up to 1500 mm above floor level, and any glazing in walls or partitions up to 800 mm above floor level.
Cumbria has its own coastline, so for homes and businesses near the sea, salt air and wind-driven rain are part of the brief. Mirrors are fitted indoors, but salty, humid coastal air can still reach the silver backing through exposed edges, particularly in bathrooms and near entrances. Protected edges, a compatible adhesive and good ventilation all help prevent black edge corrosion.
Older rural homes often have uneven walls of stone or lime plaster, which can distort a bonded mirror unless the wall is levelled or a backing board is used. Damp solid walls also need checking before a mirror is fixed to them.

Choosing your bespoke mirrors
Antique-effect mirror
Mirror with a deliberately aged, mottled finish, giving a vintage look for feature walls, alcoves and period-style rooms.
Low-iron mirror
Mirror made on low-iron glass, which reduces the slight green cast of standard glass for a brighter, more colour-accurate reflection.
Safety-backed mirror
Mirror with a bonded backing film that holds fragments together if it breaks, recommended for doors, full-height mirrors, gyms and children's rooms.
Heated demister pad
A thin heating pad bonded behind a bathroom mirror to keep an area clear of steam, wired in by a qualified electrician.
Bespoke Mirrors in Cumbria: questions
How long does a bespoke mirror take?
Plain mirrors cut to size are often ready soon after measuring, while bevelled, tinted, safety-backed or shaped mirrors take longer to process. Fitting is usually completed in a single visit, though full gym or studio walls can take longer. Your written quote sets out the expected timescale, and we confirm the date when the mirror is ready.
What edge finishes can I choose for a bespoke mirror?
The main choices are a flat polished edge, a bevelled edge and an arrised edge. Polished edges give a clean, frameless look and suit mirror walls, bevels add an angled border that catches the light, and arrised edges simply take off the sharpness where a frame or channel will hide them. Bevel width can usually be chosen too.
How is a large mirror fixed to the wall?
Large mirrors are usually bonded with an adhesive made for mirror backing and supported along the bottom edge by a slim channel or clips. The support carries the weight while the adhesive cures and adds security afterwards. Smaller mirrors can be screw-fixed through drilled holes with decorative caps, which makes them easier to remove later.
Can a mirror be cut around sockets and light switches?
Yes. We mark socket and switch positions on the template, cut the openings in the mirror, then remove and refit the faceplates so the mirror sits neatly behind them with the power isolated. If sockets need moving or adding, a qualified electrician should do that before we template so the cut-outs line up.
Which parts of Cumbria do you cover for bespoke mirrors?
We cover the whole of Cumbria, including Carlisle, Barrow-in-Furness, Kendal, Whitehaven and Workington, and postcode areas CA, LA. Building rules for bespoke mirrors here follow the regulations for England. Enter your postcode on the quote form and we will confirm cover; then a glazier will arrange a free survey before giving you a written quote.
