About glass splashback behind hob in Oban

Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening, so every socket, switch, extractor and window-reveal cut-out is made beforehand. Sockets cannot be moved after the glass is ordered without remaking the panel, so electrical positions need to be final at templating.

Our glaziers remove and refit socket and switch faceplates so the glass can sit behind them, with the power isolated first. Moving or adding sockets, or any other electrical alteration, needs a qualified electrician, ideally before the splashback is templated.

Splashbacks are made from toughened glass because it copes with heat from a hob and with the stress around socket cut-outs far better than ordinary glass. Untoughened coloured glass is more prone to cracking behind a hob or across a cut-out, so we only fit toughened panels.

Splashbacks are templated once the worktops, units and hob are fitted, not from kitchen plans. Worktop heights, wall angles and socket positions often move during installation, and the glass is made to the finished dimensions so edges line up and gaps stay even.

What a typical job includes

Coast
Oban is about 1 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Splashbacks sit indoors, so the coast affects them little, but kitchens in damp coastal homes can see condensation on cold external walls. The wall needs to be dry and sound before bonding, and good extraction helps keep edges and silicone clean.
Daylight and sun
In Oban the midwinter sun reaches about 10° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 6.6 hours of daylight, rising to about 57° and 17.4 hours in midsummer. Glossy glass reflects light from windows and under-cabinet lighting, brightening a dark kitchen. Low winter sun hitting a glass wall can cause glare, so a satin finish may suit a splashback that faces a south-facing window.
Access and setting
Older rural homes often have uneven solid walls with lime plaster or stone, so the wall may need making flat before glass can be bonded. Where a range cooker is fitted, its heat and clearance needs are checked before ordering.
Rules in Scotland
Building regulations do not usually apply to this type of work, but we confirm anything that does in writing with your quote.

Unpainted toughened glass over a painted wall or feature finish, protecting it from splashes while letting the surface behind show.

Glass Splashbacks in Oban: questions

How do I clean a glass splashback?

Wipe it with a soft cloth and warm soapy water, or a non-abrasive glass cleaner, then buff dry for a streak-free finish. Grease behind the hob comes off easily because there are no grout lines. Avoid scourers, abrasive creams and blades, which can scratch the glass, and do not use cleaners that could seep behind the edges.

How do you match the colour of a glass splashback?

We can match many paint and RAL colours, and the most reliable way to choose is from a physical glass sample viewed in your own kitchen. Colours look different on screens and under different lighting. For pale colours we usually suggest low-iron glass, because standard glass adds a green tint to the painted back.

Can a glass splashback go behind a hob?

Yes, provided it is toughened glass and the hob maker's clearances are followed. Toughened glass copes with the heat from a hob far better than ordinary glass, and it is what we fit behind cookers. Some gas hobs need a minimum gap to the wall, so we check your hob's instructions before the glass is ordered.

When should my glass splashback be measured?

Your splashback should be templated after the worktops, units and hob are installed and any electrical work is finished. The glass is made to the exact finished dimensions, including socket positions, so measuring from plans or before worktops go in often leads to panels that do not fit and have to be remade.
