Toughened glass splashback in Exeter: what to know
Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening, so every socket, switch, extractor and window-reveal cut-out is made beforehand. Sockets cannot be moved after the glass is ordered without remaking the panel, so electrical positions need to be final at templating.
After templating, made-to-measure splashbacks are usually ready within a few weeks, depending on colour and finish. Fitting a typical kitchen takes part of a day, and the kitchen can normally be used again straight afterwards, though the silicone needs time to cure fully.
Splashbacks are templated once the worktops, units and hob are fitted, not from kitchen plans. Worktop heights, wall angles and socket positions often move during installation, and the glass is made to the finished dimensions so edges line up and gaps stay even.
Standard glass has a green tint that shows through back-painted colours, especially whites, creams and pale greys. Low-iron glass contains less iron, removes most of that tint and keeps the painted colour close to the sample, so it is the usual choice for light colours.
Included as standard
- Removal and refitting of socket and switch faceplates
- Silicone-finished edges, final clean and care advice
- Survey and templating after worktops and hob are fitted
- Bonding with adhesive compatible with the painted back

About Exeter for this job
- Postcodes covered
- EX1, EX2, EX3, EX4 and the surrounding area, including Exmouth, Tiverton and Newton Abbot
- Coast
- Exeter is about 6 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Splashbacks sit indoors, so the coast affects them little, but kitchens in damp coastal homes can see condensation on cold external walls. The wall needs to be dry and sound before bonding, and good extraction helps keep edges and silicone clean.
- Daylight and sun
- In Exeter the midwinter sun reaches about 16° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.7 hours of daylight, rising to about 63° and 16.3 hours in midsummer. Glossy glass reflects light from windows and under-cabinet lighting, brightening a dark kitchen. Low winter sun hitting a glass wall can cause glare, so a satin finish may suit a splashback that faces a south-facing window.
- Access and setting
- Kitchens in flats and terraces often have narrow access and tight stairs, so long splashbacks may be split into shorter panels with planned joints. Parking for the fitting team and building rules on working hours can also affect scheduling.
- Rules in England
- Building regulations do not usually apply to this type of work, but we confirm anything that does in writing with your quote.

Glass Splashbacks in Exeter: questions
How long does it take to get a glass splashback fitted?
After templating, made-to-measure splashbacks are usually ready within a few weeks, depending on the colour and finish. Fitting a typical kitchen takes part of a day, and you can normally use the kitchen again once we have finished. The silicone needs time to cure fully, and we tell you how long on the day.
Can a glass splashback be fitted over existing tiles?
It is usually better to remove the tiles and make the wall good first. Glass needs a flat, sound surface for the adhesive to bond evenly, and grout lines, uneven tiles or loose tiles can show through or create stress points. Removing tiles also stops the glass standing too far forward of the worktop and sockets.
Can I fit a glass splashback myself?
It is possible, but the risks are mostly in measuring and handling. A small error in templating or a socket position means the toughened panel has to be remade, because it cannot be trimmed. Large panels are heavy and awkward to place without damaging worktops, and the adhesive must suit the painted back. We measure, make and fit as one job.
What affects the cost of a glass splashback?
The main cost drivers are the total glass area, the number of panels and joints, the number of socket and switch cut-outs, the colour and glass type, and how easy the wall is to reach. Low-iron glass, metallic or printed finishes and shaped panels add cost. See the guide prices for typical ranges.
