Coloured glass splashback in Plymouth

The wall behind a splashback must be flat, sound and dry so the adhesive bonds evenly. Old tiles are usually removed and the wall made good, because uneven surfaces show through the glass and can create stress points behind the panel.

Colours look different on screens, in daylight and under kitchen lighting, so choose from a physical glass sample rather than a website or paint chart. We can match many paint and RAL colours, and a sample panel viewed in your own kitchen avoids surprises.

Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening, so every socket, switch, extractor and window-reveal cut-out is made beforehand. Sockets cannot be moved after the glass is ordered without remaking the panel, so electrical positions need to be final at templating.

Standard glass has a green tint that shows through back-painted colours, especially whites, creams and pale greys. Low-iron glass contains less iron, removes most of that tint and keeps the painted colour close to the sample, so it is the usual choice for light colours.

About Plymouth for this job

Coast
Plymouth is about 1 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Splashbacks sit indoors, so the coast affects them little, but kitchens in damp coastal homes can see condensation on cold external walls. The wall needs to be dry and sound before bonding, and good extraction helps keep edges and silicone clean.
Daylight and sun
In Plymouth the midwinter sun reaches about 16° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.8 hours of daylight, rising to about 63° and 16.2 hours in midsummer. Glossy glass reflects light from windows and under-cabinet lighting, brightening a dark kitchen. Low winter sun hitting a glass wall can cause glare, so a satin finish may suit a splashback that faces a south-facing window.
Access and setting
Kitchens in flats and terraces often have narrow access and tight stairs, so long splashbacks may be split into shorter panels with planned joints. Parking for the fitting team and building rules on working hours can also affect scheduling.
Rules in England
Building regulations do not usually apply to this type of work, but we confirm anything that does in writing with your quote.

Glass Splashbacks in Plymouth: questions

How do you match the colour of a glass splashback?

We can match many paint and RAL colours, and the most reliable way to choose is from a physical glass sample viewed in your own kitchen. Colours look different on screens and under different lighting. For pale colours we usually suggest low-iron glass, because standard glass adds a green tint to the painted back.

Can a glass splashback be fitted over existing tiles?

It is usually better to remove the tiles and make the wall good first. Glass needs a flat, sound surface for the adhesive to bond evenly, and grout lines, uneven tiles or loose tiles can show through or create stress points. Removing tiles also stops the glass standing too far forward of the worktop and sockets.

How long does it take to get a glass splashback fitted?

After templating, made-to-measure splashbacks are usually ready within a few weeks, depending on the colour and finish. Fitting a typical kitchen takes part of a day, and you can normally use the kitchen again once we have finished. The silicone needs time to cure fully, and we tell you how long on the day.

Can you cut holes in a glass splashback for sockets?

Yes. Socket, switch and extractor cut-outs are made at the factory before the glass is toughened, because toughened glass cannot be cut afterwards. That means socket positions must be final when we template. If sockets need moving or adding, a qualified electrician should do that first, and we template around the new positions.
