Toughened glass splashback in Perth: what to know

Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening, so every socket, switch, extractor and window-reveal cut-out is made beforehand. Sockets cannot be moved after the glass is ordered without remaking the panel, so electrical positions need to be final at templating.

Glass splashbacks have no grout lines to stain, so cleaning is simply a soft cloth with warm soapy water or a non-abrasive glass cleaner. Avoid scourers, abrasive creams and sharp scrapers, which can scratch the glass surface and dull the finish over time.

Our glaziers remove and refit socket and switch faceplates so the glass can sit behind them, with the power isolated first. Moving or adding sockets, or any other electrical alteration, needs a qualified electrician, ideally before the splashback is templated.

Long runs and tall walls are usually made from more than one panel, because large sheets are heavy and hard to carry through houses. Joints are planned at corners, behind the hob centre line or at natural breaks, and are finished with a thin, neat silicone line.

Coast
Perth sits roughly 9 km from the nearest coastline, close enough that exposure on open or high ground is worth considering. Splashbacks sit indoors, so the coast affects them little, but kitchens in damp coastal homes can see condensation on cold external walls. The wall needs to be dry and sound before bonding, and good extraction helps keep edges and silicone clean.
Daylight and sun
In Perth the midwinter sun reaches about 10° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 6.6 hours of daylight, rising to about 57° and 17.4 hours in midsummer. Glossy glass reflects light from windows and under-cabinet lighting, brightening a dark kitchen. Low winter sun hitting a glass wall can cause glare, so a satin finish may suit a splashback that faces a south-facing window.
Access and setting
Older rural homes often have uneven solid walls with lime plaster or stone, so the wall may need making flat before glass can be bonded. Where a range cooker is fitted, its heat and clearance needs are checked before ordering.
Rules in Scotland
Building regulations do not usually apply to this type of work, but we confirm anything that does in writing with your quote.

Choosing your glass splashbacks

Back-painted colour

Toughened glass painted on the back in a matched colour, giving a smooth, glossy finish in almost any shade to suit units or walls.

Satin finish

Acid-etched glass with a soft, low-sheen face that reduces reflections and glare, useful opposite windows or bright lighting.

Low-iron glass

Glass with less iron, removing the green tint of standard glass so whites, creams and pale colours look true to the sample.

Glass Splashbacks in Perth: questions

How do you match the colour of a glass splashback?

We can match many paint and RAL colours, and the most reliable way to choose is from a physical glass sample viewed in your own kitchen. Colours look different on screens and under different lighting. For pale colours we usually suggest low-iron glass, because standard glass adds a green tint to the painted back.

Can you cut holes in a glass splashback for sockets?

Yes. Socket, switch and extractor cut-outs are made at the factory before the glass is toughened, because toughened glass cannot be cut afterwards. That means socket positions must be final when we template. If sockets need moving or adding, a qualified electrician should do that first, and we template around the new positions.

Can a glass splashback go behind a hob?

Yes, provided it is toughened glass and the hob maker's clearances are followed. Toughened glass copes with the heat from a hob far better than ordinary glass, and it is what we fit behind cookers. Some gas hobs need a minimum gap to the wall, so we check your hob's instructions before the glass is ordered.

How do I clean a glass splashback?

Wipe it with a soft cloth and warm soapy water, or a non-abrasive glass cleaner, then buff dry for a streak-free finish. Grease behind the hob comes off easily because there are no grout lines. Avoid scourers, abrasive creams and blades, which can scratch the glass, and do not use cleaners that could seep behind the edges.
