Toughened glass splashback across Dundee
The wall behind a splashback must be flat, sound and dry so the adhesive bonds evenly. Old tiles are usually removed and the wall made good, because uneven surfaces show through the glass and can create stress points behind the panel.
Glass splashbacks have no grout lines to stain, so cleaning is simply a soft cloth with warm soapy water or a non-abrasive glass cleaner. Avoid scourers, abrasive creams and sharp scrapers, which can scratch the glass surface and dull the finish over time.
Colours look different on screens, in daylight and under kitchen lighting, so choose from a physical glass sample rather than a website or paint chart. We can match many paint and RAL colours, and a sample panel viewed in your own kitchen avoids surprises.
Standard glass has a green tint that shows through back-painted colours, especially whites, creams and pale greys. Low-iron glass contains less iron, removes most of that tint and keeps the painted colour close to the sample, so it is the usual choice for light colours.
What a typical job includes
- Silicone-finished edges, final clean and care advice
- Bonding with adhesive compatible with the painted back
- Back-painting to your chosen colour or finish
- Removal and refitting of socket and switch faceplates

- Coast
- Dundee is about 1 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Splashbacks sit indoors, so the coast affects them little, but kitchens in damp coastal homes can see condensation on cold external walls. The wall needs to be dry and sound before bonding, and good extraction helps keep edges and silicone clean.
- Daylight and sun
- In Dundee the midwinter sun reaches about 10° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 6.6 hours of daylight, rising to about 57° and 17.4 hours in midsummer. Glossy glass reflects light from windows and under-cabinet lighting, brightening a dark kitchen. Low winter sun hitting a glass wall can cause glare, so a satin finish may suit a splashback that faces a south-facing window.
- Access and setting
- Kitchens in flats and terraces often have narrow access and tight stairs, so long splashbacks may be split into shorter panels with planned joints. Parking for the fitting team and building rules on working hours can also affect scheduling.
- Rules in Scotland
- Building regulations do not usually apply to this type of work, but we confirm anything that does in writing with your quote.

Glass Splashbacks in Dundee: questions
Can you cut holes in a glass splashback for sockets?
Yes. Socket, switch and extractor cut-outs are made at the factory before the glass is toughened, because toughened glass cannot be cut afterwards. That means socket positions must be final when we template. If sockets need moving or adding, a qualified electrician should do that first, and we template around the new positions.
Can a glass splashback go behind a hob?
Yes, provided it is toughened glass and the hob maker's clearances are followed. Toughened glass copes with the heat from a hob far better than ordinary glass, and it is what we fit behind cookers. Some gas hobs need a minimum gap to the wall, so we check your hob's instructions before the glass is ordered.
When should my glass splashback be measured?
Your splashback should be templated after the worktops, units and hob are installed and any electrical work is finished. The glass is made to the exact finished dimensions, including socket positions, so measuring from plans or before worktops go in often leads to panels that do not fit and have to be remade.
Can a glass splashback be fitted over existing tiles?
It is usually better to remove the tiles and make the wall good first. Glass needs a flat, sound surface for the adhesive to bond evenly, and grout lines, uneven tiles or loose tiles can show through or create stress points. Removing tiles also stops the glass standing too far forward of the worktop and sockets.
