Coloured glass splashback in Chard: what to know
Our glaziers remove and refit socket and switch faceplates so the glass can sit behind them, with the power isolated first. Moving or adding sockets, or any other electrical alteration, needs a qualified electrician, ideally before the splashback is templated.
After templating, made-to-measure splashbacks are usually ready within a few weeks, depending on colour and finish. Fitting a typical kitchen takes part of a day, and the kitchen can normally be used again straight afterwards, though the silicone needs time to cure fully.
Splashbacks are templated once the worktops, units and hob are fitted, not from kitchen plans. Worktop heights, wall angles and socket positions often move during installation, and the glass is made to the finished dimensions so edges line up and gaps stay even.
Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening, so every socket, switch, extractor and window-reveal cut-out is made beforehand. Sockets cannot be moved after the glass is ordered without remaking the panel, so electrical positions need to be final at templating.

Chard at a glance

- TA20 and the surrounding area, including Taunton, Bridport and Yeovil
- Coast
- Chard sits roughly 16 km from the nearest coastline, close enough that exposure on open or high ground is worth considering. Splashbacks sit indoors, so the coast affects them little, but kitchens in damp coastal homes can see condensation on cold external walls. The wall needs to be dry and sound before bonding, and good extraction helps keep edges and silicone clean.
- Daylight and sun
- In Chard the midwinter sun reaches about 16° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.7 hours of daylight, rising to about 63° and 16.3 hours in midsummer. Glossy glass reflects light from windows and under-cabinet lighting, brightening a dark kitchen. Low winter sun hitting a glass wall can cause glare, so a satin finish may suit a splashback that faces a south-facing window.
- Access and setting
- Older rural homes often have uneven solid walls with lime plaster or stone, so the wall may need making flat before glass can be bonded. Where a range cooker is fitted, its heat and clearance needs are checked before ordering.

- Building regulations do not usually apply to this type of work, but we confirm anything that does in writing with your quote.

What you can choose
Low-iron glass
Glass with less iron, removing the green tint of standard glass so whites, creams and pale colours look true to the sample.
Back-painted colour
Toughened glass painted on the back in a matched colour, giving a smooth, glossy finish in almost any shade to suit units or walls.
Printed design
A digitally printed image or pattern on the back of the glass, sealed behind it so the front stays smooth and wipeable.
Glass Splashbacks in Chard: questions
What affects the cost of a glass splashback?
The main cost drivers are the total glass area, the number of panels and joints, the number of socket and switch cut-outs, the colour and glass type, and how easy the wall is to reach. Low-iron glass, metallic or printed finishes and shaped panels add cost. See the guide prices for typical ranges.
When should my glass splashback be measured?
Your splashback should be templated after the worktops, units and hob are installed and any electrical work is finished. The glass is made to the exact finished dimensions, including socket positions, so measuring from plans or before worktops go in often leads to panels that do not fit and have to be remade.
Can a glass splashback be fitted over existing tiles?
It is usually better to remove the tiles and make the wall good first. Glass needs a flat, sound surface for the adhesive to bond evenly, and grout lines, uneven tiles or loose tiles can show through or create stress points. Removing tiles also stops the glass standing too far forward of the worktop and sockets.
Why does my white glass splashback look slightly green?
Standard glass contains iron, which gives it a green tint that shows through pale back-painted colours, particularly white and cream. Low-iron glass has much less iron, so the colour behind looks close to the painted sample. If you are choosing a light colour, it is worth specifying low-iron glass from the start.
