About glass splashbacks in Tynemouth

Splashbacks are templated once the worktops, units and hob are fitted, not from kitchen plans. Worktop heights, wall angles and socket positions often move during installation, and the glass is made to the finished dimensions so edges line up and gaps stay even.

Our glaziers remove and refit socket and switch faceplates so the glass can sit behind them, with the power isolated first. Moving or adding sockets, or any other electrical alteration, needs a qualified electrician, ideally before the splashback is templated.

Long runs and tall walls are usually made from more than one panel, because large sheets are heavy and hard to carry through houses. Joints are planned at corners, behind the hob centre line or at natural breaks, and are finished with a thin, neat silicone line.

Standard glass has a green tint that shows through back-painted colours, especially whites, creams and pale greys. Low-iron glass contains less iron, removes most of that tint and keeps the painted colour close to the sample, so it is the usual choice for light colours.

Coast
Tynemouth is about 1 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Splashbacks sit indoors, so the coast affects them little, but kitchens in damp coastal homes can see condensation on cold external walls. The wall needs to be dry and sound before bonding, and good extraction helps keep edges and silicone clean.
Daylight and sun
In Tynemouth the midwinter sun reaches about 12° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 6.9 hours of daylight, rising to about 58° and 17.1 hours in midsummer. Glossy glass reflects light from windows and under-cabinet lighting, brightening a dark kitchen. Low winter sun hitting a glass wall can cause glare, so a satin finish may suit a splashback that faces a south-facing window.
Access and setting
Kitchens in flats and terraces often have narrow access and tight stairs, so long splashbacks may be split into shorter panels with planned joints. Parking for the fitting team and building rules on working hours can also affect scheduling.
Rules in England
Building regulations do not usually apply to this type of work, but we confirm anything that does in writing with your quote.

Glass Splashbacks in Tynemouth: questions

When should my glass splashback be measured?

Your splashback should be templated after the worktops, units and hob are installed and any electrical work is finished. The glass is made to the exact finished dimensions, including socket positions, so measuring from plans or before worktops go in often leads to panels that do not fit and have to be remade.

Can a glass splashback go behind a hob?

Yes, provided it is toughened glass and the hob maker's clearances are followed. Toughened glass copes with the heat from a hob far better than ordinary glass, and it is what we fit behind cookers. Some gas hobs need a minimum gap to the wall, so we check your hob's instructions before the glass is ordered.

What affects the cost of a glass splashback?

The main cost drivers are the total glass area, the number of panels and joints, the number of socket and switch cut-outs, the colour and glass type, and how easy the wall is to reach. Low-iron glass, metallic or printed finishes and shaped panels add cost. See the guide prices for typical ranges.

How long does it take to get a glass splashback fitted?

After templating, made-to-measure splashbacks are usually ready within a few weeks, depending on the colour and finish. Fitting a typical kitchen takes part of a day, and you can normally use the kitchen again once we have finished. The silicone needs time to cure fully, and we tell you how long on the day.
