Awkward alcoves and sloping ceilings in Doncaster bathrooms are where made-to-measure shower glass helps, because each panel is cut to the real shape before it is toughened.

Doncaster: frameless shower screens
The price depends mainly on panel sizes, the number of panels, glass thickness, the hinge and bracing hardware, and any cut-outs for sloping ceilings, trays or skirting. Low-iron or satin glass, an easy-clean coating and special finishes add cost. See the guide prices for typical ranges.
Screens should be measured after tiling is finished, not from plans. Walls are often out of plumb and floors fall towards the drain, and the glass is made to follow those real angles. Measuring early is a common cause of uneven gaps and leaks.
Shower screen glass is toughened safety glass made to BS EN 12150. It is heated and then quickly cooled during manufacture, which makes it much stronger than ordinary glass and means that if it does break, it breaks into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards.
Because toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after toughening, hinge holes, clamp positions and notches around trays or skirting are formed before the glass goes into the furnace. A panel that does not fit has to be remade, so accurate templating matters.

Doncaster at a glance
- Postcodes covered
- DN1, DN4, DN2 and the surrounding area, including Dinnington, Rotherham and Pontefract
- Coast
- Doncaster is well inland, around 35 km from the nearest coast, so salt exposure is not usually a factor.
- Daylight and sun
- In Doncaster the midwinter sun reaches about 13° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.2 hours of daylight, rising to about 60° and 16.8 hours in midsummer. Bathrooms with small or north-facing windows benefit from clear or low-iron glass that does not block the daylight available. Where a window looks onto the shower, a satin band or obscure glass gives privacy without making the room feel darker.
- Access and setting
- Flats often mean carrying large panels up stairs or in small lifts, so panel sizes may need splitting. Building rules on working hours and noise, and bathrooms above other homes, make careful sealing and protection of finishes especially important.
- Rules in England
- Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations in England: glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door, up to 1500 mm above floor level, and any glazing in walls or partitions up to 800 mm above floor level.

Low-iron glass
Glass with less iron, which removes the green edge tint of standard glass and keeps tiles and stone looking their true colour.
Shower Screens in Doncaster: questions
When should my shower screen be measured?
Your screen should be measured once the walls are tiled and the tray or wet room floor is finished. The glass is made to follow the exact angles of the finished surfaces, and tiles, adhesive and trims all change the dimensions. If you are mid-renovation, we can advise on fixing positions and backing before tiling starts.
How do I stop limescale building up on shower glass?
The simplest habit is to squeegee the glass after every shower so water does not dry on it. Clean weekly with a mild, non-abrasive bathroom cleaner and a soft cloth, and rinse well. Avoid scouring pads, powders and strong descalers, which can scratch coatings, dull hinge finishes and break down silicone seals.
How long does it take to fit a shower screen?
Most shower screens are fitted in a single visit once the glass has been made, which usually takes a couple of weeks after measuring. The silicone then needs time to cure, so you should wait before using the shower, and we tell you how long on the day. Your quote confirms the expected timescale.
Can a shower screen be fitted to a stud or plasterboard wall?
Yes, provided the hinges and brackets fix into solid backing. On stud or plasterboard walls that usually means timber noggins behind the fixing points, or suitable heavy-duty fixings where noggins were not fitted. A heavy glass door on weak fixings can drop or pull away, so we check the wall during the survey.
