Safety glass for doors across Bournemouth
Edge finish affects both look and safety. Arrised edges are lightly sanded to take off sharpness and suit glass held in frames. Polished edges are smooth and clear for exposed edges on tables, shelves and frameless panels. Bevelled edges add a decorative angled border.
Once glass has been toughened, it cannot be cut, drilled, notched or edge-worked. All shaping, holes for handles or hinges, and cut-outs for sockets must be finished on the float glass first. This is why accurate measuring and templates matter before any order is placed.
Laminated glass is two or more sheets bonded with a plastic interlayer, often PVB. If it breaks, the pieces stick to the interlayer and the pane stays in place. That makes it useful for overhead glass, ground-floor security and openings where an empty hole would be a risk.
BS EN 12600 classifies safety glass by a pendulum impact test, with class 1 the highest and class 3 the lowest. In England, critical locations generally need at least class 3, and door or side panels wider than 900mm need class 2 or better.

About Bournemouth for this job
- Postcodes covered
- BH2, BH4, BH1 and the surrounding area, including Christchurch, Poole and Ferndown
- Coast
- Bournemouth is about 1 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Near the coast, salt spray can mark exposed glass edges and corrode metal fixings. Polished edges and sealed laminated edges cope better outdoors, and stainless steel clamps and hinges are worth specifying for external safety glass panels and screens.
- Daylight and sun
- In Bournemouth the midwinter sun reaches about 16° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.7 hours of daylight, rising to about 63° and 16.3 hours in midsummer. Strong sun on large glass panels can cause glare and fade furniture behind them. Tinted, solar control or low-iron toughened glass each change how much light, heat and colour come through, so orientation is worth considering when choosing.
- Access and setting
- In flats and city buildings, large panels of safety glass may need to fit through narrow stairs, lifts and doorways. Measuring access routes at the survey avoids problems, and laminated glass suits ground-floor doors and screens facing the street.
- Rules in England
- Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations in England: glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door, up to 1500 mm above floor level, and any glazing in walls or partitions up to 800 mm above floor level.

Approved Document Q applies to new homes in England, where doors and windows are expected to meet PAS 24 or an equivalent standard. It does not apply to replacements in existing homes, but PAS 24 products are still a sensible choice.

Safety Glass in Bournemouth: questions
Can toughened glass be cut or drilled after it is made?
No. Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or edge-worked once it has been toughened, because any damage to the surface releases the internal stress and the whole pane shatters. All sizes, holes and cut-outs must be finalised before toughening. That is why accurate measurements or a template are needed before the order is placed.
Should I choose a polished or arrised edge?
Choose polished edges where the edge will be seen or touched, such as tabletops, shelves and frameless panels, because they are smooth and look neat. Arrised edges are lightly sanded to remove sharpness and are fine where the edge sits hidden in a frame. Bevelled edges are decorative and suit mirrors and some tabletops.
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heat treated so it is stronger and, if broken, crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces, leaving the opening empty. Laminated glass is sheets bonded to an interlayer, so when it breaks the pieces stay stuck in place. Both can be safety glass. Laminated is preferred where falling glass or an open hole would be a hazard.
How do I know if my glass is safety glass?
Look for a permanent mark etched or printed in a corner of the pane. It should name the maker or supplier and the standard, such as BS EN 12150 for toughened glass, or show a BS EN 12600 class. Older glass may have no mark. If you are unsure, a glazier can check and advise.
