Safety glass for doors across Pembroke Dock
Safety glass in a building should carry a permanent mark, usually in a corner, that stays visible after fitting. It names the maker or supplier and the standard, such as BS EN 12150 for toughened glass. The mark is how a buyer or inspector can confirm what was fitted.
Toughened glass is ordinary float glass that has been cut to size, heated and then cooled quickly with jets of air. This leaves the surfaces in compression, making it several times stronger than untreated glass of the same thickness. When it does break, it crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces.
Edge finish affects both look and safety. Arrised edges are lightly sanded to take off sharpness and suit glass held in frames. Polished edges are smooth and clear for exposed edges on tables, shelves and frameless panels. Bevelled edges add a decorative angled border.
Low-iron glass removes most of the slight green tint that ordinary clear glass shows at its edge and through thick panels. It suits tabletops, display shelves and splashback-style panels where true colours and a clearer edge matter.

Pembroke Dock at a glance
- Postcodes covered
- SA72 and the surrounding area, including Milford Haven, Haverfordwest and Tenby
- Coast
- Pembroke Dock is about 2 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Near the coast, salt spray can mark exposed glass edges and corrode metal fixings. Polished edges and sealed laminated edges cope better outdoors, and stainless steel clamps and hinges are worth specifying for external safety glass panels and screens.
- Daylight and sun
- In Pembroke Dock the midwinter sun reaches about 15° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.6 hours of daylight, rising to about 62° and 16.4 hours in midsummer. Strong sun on large glass panels can cause glare and fade furniture behind them. Tinted, solar control or low-iron toughened glass each change how much light, heat and colour come through, so orientation is worth considering when choosing.
- Access and setting
- Older rural homes often have internal doors and screens with old, unmarked glass. Upgrading them to toughened or laminated safety glass is common, and timber door frames may need careful beading when the new glass is fitted.
- Rules in Wales
- In Wales, Approved Document N covers safety glazing: safety glass is needed in and around doors and in low-level glazing where people could walk into it.

Security rules for doors and windows differ between the UK nations. For replacement doors and windows in Wales, products tested to PAS 24 are a sensible benchmark.
What you can choose
Low-iron glass
Extra-clear glass with much less green tint, chosen for tabletops, shelving and panels where colour and edge clarity matter.
Toughened laminated glass
Toughened sheets laminated together, combining strength with post-breakage retention, often used for frameless panels and higher-load applications.
Laminated safety glass
Two or more sheets bonded with an interlayer that holds broken glass in place, for overhead, security and fall-risk locations.
Safety Glass in Pembroke Dock: questions
Is laminated glass better for security?
Laminated glass usually gives better security than toughened glass of similar thickness, because the interlayer holds the glass together after it cracks, so making a hole takes more effort. Thicker interlayers and multi-layer laminates give more resistance. For ground-floor windows, shopfronts and doors, laminated glass is often chosen for this reason.
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heat treated so it is stronger and, if broken, crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces, leaving the opening empty. Laminated glass is sheets bonded to an interlayer, so when it breaks the pieces stay stuck in place. Both can be safety glass. Laminated is preferred where falling glass or an open hole would be a hazard.
Can toughened glass break on its own?
Rarely, yes. Tiny nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass can expand over time and cause a toughened pane to break without an obvious impact. Edge damage during fitting can also cause later failure. Heat soak testing reduces the risk of inclusion-related breakage, and careful handling and correct fitting protect the edges.
How much does toughened glass cut to size cost?
The price depends on the dimensions, thickness, glass type, edge finish, number of holes and cut-outs, any shapes, and whether you want supply only or fitting. Laminated, low-iron and obscure glass cost more than clear toughened. See the guide prices for typical panels, then get a written quote for your exact specification.
