Toughened glass cut to size for homes and businesses in Whitstable
Toughened glass is ordinary float glass that has been cut to size, heated and then cooled quickly with jets of air. This leaves the surfaces in compression, making it several times stronger than untreated glass of the same thickness. When it does break, it crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces.
Safety glass in a building should carry a permanent mark, usually in a corner, that stays visible after fitting. It names the maker or supplier and the standard, such as BS EN 12150 for toughened glass. The mark is how a buyer or inspector can confirm what was fitted.
Glass tabletops and shelves need the right thickness for the span and load. Thicker glass deflects less, so a long shelf or a large table needs a heavier panel than a small side table. The supplier confirms a suitable thickness for the use, not just the size.
Once glass has been toughened, it cannot be cut, drilled, notched or edge-worked. All shaping, holes for handles or hinges, and cut-outs for sockets must be finished on the float glass first. This is why accurate measuring and templates matter before any order is placed.

Whitstable at a glance
- Postcodes covered
- CT5 and the surrounding area, including Herne Bay, Canterbury and Faversham
- Coast
- Whitstable is about 1 km from the coast or a tidal estuary, so salt air and wind-driven rain are worth planning for. Near the coast, salt spray can mark exposed glass edges and corrode metal fixings. Polished edges and sealed laminated edges cope better outdoors, and stainless steel clamps and hinges are worth specifying for external safety glass panels and screens.
- Daylight and sun
- In Whitstable the midwinter sun reaches about 15° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.6 hours of daylight, rising to about 62° and 16.4 hours in midsummer. Strong sun on large glass panels can cause glare and fade furniture behind them. Tinted, solar control or low-iron toughened glass each change how much light, heat and colour come through, so orientation is worth considering when choosing.
- Access and setting
- Older rural homes often have internal doors and screens with old, unmarked glass. Upgrading them to toughened or laminated safety glass is common, and timber door frames may need careful beading when the new glass is fitted.
- Rules in England
- Approved Document K requires safety glass in critical locations in England: glazing in doors and in side panels within 300 mm of a door, up to 1500 mm above floor level, and any glazing in walls or partitions up to 800 mm above floor level.

Approved Document Q applies to new homes in England, where doors and windows are expected to meet PAS 24 or an equivalent standard. It does not apply to replacements in existing homes, but PAS 24 products are still a sensible choice.
Options to choose between
Polished edges
Smooth, clear edges for exposed glass on tables, shelves and frameless panels, safer to handle and neater to look at.
Clear toughened glass
Heat-treated float glass that breaks into small, blunt pieces, for doors, screens, tabletops and shelves in a range of thicknesses.
Heat soak testing
An extra heat test after toughening that reduces the risk of spontaneous breakage from nickel sulphide inclusions in the glass.
Safety Glass in Whitstable: questions
Can toughened glass be cut or drilled after it is made?
No. Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled or edge-worked once it has been toughened, because any damage to the surface releases the internal stress and the whole pane shatters. All sizes, holes and cut-outs must be finalised before toughening. That is why accurate measurements or a template are needed before the order is placed.
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass is heat treated so it is stronger and, if broken, crumbles into small, relatively blunt pieces, leaving the opening empty. Laminated glass is sheets bonded to an interlayer, so when it breaks the pieces stay stuck in place. Both can be safety glass. Laminated is preferred where falling glass or an open hole would be a hazard.
How much does toughened glass cut to size cost?
The price depends on the dimensions, thickness, glass type, edge finish, number of holes and cut-outs, any shapes, and whether you want supply only or fitting. Laminated, low-iron and obscure glass cost more than clear toughened. See the guide prices for typical panels, then get a written quote for your exact specification.
Should I choose a polished or arrised edge?
Choose polished edges where the edge will be seen or touched, such as tabletops, shelves and frameless panels, because they are smooth and look neat. Arrised edges are lightly sanded to remove sharpness and are fine where the edge sits hidden in a frame. Bevelled edges are decorative and suit mirrors and some tabletops.
