Toughened glass splashback in Comber
Our glaziers remove and refit socket and switch faceplates so the glass can sit behind them, with the power isolated first. Moving or adding sockets, or any other electrical alteration, needs a qualified electrician, ideally before the splashback is templated.
Splashbacks are made from toughened glass because it copes with heat from a hob and with the stress around socket cut-outs far better than ordinary glass. Untoughened coloured glass is more prone to cracking behind a hob or across a cut-out, so we only fit toughened panels.
The price depends on the total glass area, the number of panels and joints, the number of cut-outs, the colour and glass type, and access to the wall. Low-iron glass, metallic or printed finishes and complex shapes add cost. See the guide prices for typical ranges.
Standard glass has a green tint that shows through back-painted colours, especially whites, creams and pale greys. Low-iron glass contains less iron, removes most of that tint and keeps the painted colour close to the sample, so it is the usual choice for light colours.
What a typical job includes
- Toughened glass made to template with factory cut-outs
- Removal and refitting of socket and switch faceplates
- Back-painting to your chosen colour or finish
- Silicone-finished edges, final clean and care advice

Comber at a glance

- Coast
- Comber sits roughly 13 km from the nearest coastline, close enough that exposure on open or high ground is worth considering. Splashbacks sit indoors, so the coast affects them little, but kitchens in damp coastal homes can see condensation on cold external walls. The wall needs to be dry and sound before bonding, and good extraction helps keep edges and silicone clean.
- Daylight and sun
- In Comber the midwinter sun reaches about 12° above the horizon at noon, with roughly 7.0 hours of daylight, rising to about 59° and 17.0 hours in midsummer. Glossy glass reflects light from windows and under-cabinet lighting, brightening a dark kitchen. Low winter sun hitting a glass wall can cause glare, so a satin finish may suit a splashback that faces a south-facing window.
- Access and setting
- Older rural homes often have uneven solid walls with lime plaster or stone, so the wall may need making flat before glass can be bonded. Where a range cooker is fitted, its heat and clearance needs are checked before ordering.
- Rules in Northern Ireland
- Building regulations do not usually apply to this type of work, but we confirm anything that does in writing with your quote.

Glass Splashbacks in Comber: questions
How long does it take to get a glass splashback fitted?
After templating, made-to-measure splashbacks are usually ready within a few weeks, depending on the colour and finish. Fitting a typical kitchen takes part of a day, and you can normally use the kitchen again once we have finished. The silicone needs time to cure fully, and we tell you how long on the day.
When should my glass splashback be measured?
Your splashback should be templated after the worktops, units and hob are installed and any electrical work is finished. The glass is made to the exact finished dimensions, including socket positions, so measuring from plans or before worktops go in often leads to panels that do not fit and have to be remade.
Can a glass splashback go behind a hob?
Yes, provided it is toughened glass and the hob maker's clearances are followed. Toughened glass copes with the heat from a hob far better than ordinary glass, and it is what we fit behind cookers. Some gas hobs need a minimum gap to the wall, so we check your hob's instructions before the glass is ordered.
Why does my white glass splashback look slightly green?
Standard glass contains iron, which gives it a green tint that shows through pale back-painted colours, particularly white and cream. Low-iron glass has much less iron, so the colour behind looks close to the painted sample. If you are choosing a light colour, it is worth specifying low-iron glass from the start.
